Their goal for the day: surround the financial institutions where officials from around the globe were meeting."

"Members of the Handgun Roster Board, whose effectiveness Republican gubernatorial candidate Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. has questioned, said yesterday that the panel is essential in preventing cheap handguns from spreading across Maryland."
" 'It's been effective in ensuring good quality control on guns sold in Maryland,' said Maryland State Police Col. David B. Mitchell, chairman of the 11-member panel that regulates handgun sales in Maryland. 'You don't see junk being sold' anymore, he said."
KABA NOTE:
The so-called "junk gun" is also a less expensive gun -- the kind a lower-income citizen can afford. While a higher quality firearm is typically better for self-defensive purposes, removing lower-cost firearms from access assures that poor people aren't able to afford self-defense.
So congratulations to Maryland State Police Col. David B. Mitchell for making such elitism possible -- he must be proud. And since the taxpayers bought his sidearm for him -- and, surely, it's a nice one -- this anti-poorman policy won't affect him anyway. |

FULL TEXT BELOW... ------- "An off-duty federal air marshal exchanged gunfire with two would-be muggers in San Francisco on Thursday night, a San Francisco police spokesman said."
"The shooting began after the marshal saw two men trying to rob a couple at gunpoint on the 1100 block of Columbus Avenue at 9:45 p.m., police said. Police said the marshal, whose name was withheld, confronted the assailants, who then fired at him. The marshal fired back, police said."
"No one was hit by the gunfire, and police set up a perimeter and were searching for the two men."
It's nice seeing this person step up to the plate and help a fellow citizen -- but why can't he hit his target? |

"But war fever, macho jingoism, and waving flags is not the be all and end all of 9-11. There is much more that we must do to honor the 9-11 casualties than catching, trying, and killing their killers. If we are to truly honor those who died, we have a duty to honor them, by living our lives as they lived theirs. And if we are willing to go 180 degrees around the globe to thwart terrorists, then we need to eliminate them on our own soil as well." |

This is a bit of a liberal bragging article in which the writer praises St. Paul for being like various socialist swamps on American soil. From its text, we find the following statement:"We have hundreds of 'peace poles' in gardens all over the city, and they have a big peace bell made entirely out of melted guns." As if wasting perfectly good firearms makes one anything but dumber than a worn out boot. |

"Pepper spray is not a lethal weapon, but guns are another story."
"That's the way Police Chief Gary Walters interprets the city's new ordinance banning weapons in municipal buildings."
"Gun rights advocates had suggested because of the broad wording of the ordinance passed Monday by the City Council, women would face 30 days in jail and a $200 fine if they accidentally brought a can of pepper spray into City Hall in their purses."
" 'Pepper spray would not be a violation,' Walters said."

Letter #5 on the page ------- "The state of Maryland has more than 300 laws and regulations affecting gun use and ownership. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend recently attacked her opponent, Rep. Bob Ehrlich, for saying that two of them deserved reconsideration ("Anti-gun follies," Editorial, Sept. 17)."
"Judging by the facts alone, Mr. Ehrlich seems to be on solid ground. The first of these regulatory mechanisms, the state's Handgun Roster Board, has approved 1,500 new handguns for sale in Maryland since 1989. The second, the state's ballistic fingerprinting program, costs $1.5 million a year but has not solved a single crime." |
