"The lawmakers stressed that the Brady law has been a success, but it could work better. Most states have failed to automate their records and share them with the FBI’s national instant criminal background check system, they said."

"As a result, thousands of criminals have been able to purchase guns, they said, and thousands of legitimate gun purchases have been needlessly delayed. 'It’s a catch-as-catch-can system, and we’re not catching enough,' Schumer said."

"Both senators predicted easy and swift passage of the measure in both houses of Congress."

The NRA's 'Bulls Eye Protection Act' Put a Meaningless Amendment on a Rotten Bill, and It's Still Rotten

"A new NRA strategy for passing broad special legal protection for the worst-behaving gun sellers in America surfaced late last week -- add a meaningless amendment that does nothing to improve the bill. The amendment is a political game that tramples the rights of gun victims and their families and protects dealers like Bulls Eye Shooter Supply of Tacoma, Washington."

-------
How hypocritical of Hamm to accuse the NRA of lying when the Brady Bunch, under the guise of "victims rights," is using the judicial system to bankrupt the gun industry - their stated goal.

Recently, Senator Tom Daschle (D-SD), the Democratic Minority Leader of the Senate signed on as a cosponsor of S. 659, the firearm industry immunity bill. This NRA-backed legislation would shield the gun industry from legal action – even when it acts recklessly.

Take Action! Call Senator Daschle and tell him you are outraged by his cosponsorship of S. 659

Call his Washington, DC office at 202-224-2321

So far your calls and emails have prevented this bill from becoming law. If we are going to win this fight, we need your help now! Call Senator Daschle TODAY.

-------
After all, they have to save face and publicly condemn Daschle to draw attention away from the mutual back-scratching that will allow more invasive NICS background checks to become law, while giving the NRA a pass on its pet legisation to protect the firearms industry from frivolous lawsuits.

"According to crime investigators, straw purchasers are linked to nearly 50 percent of illegal gun-trafficking investigations."

"Anti-gun advocates are calling for gun makers and dealers to take more responsibility for curbing straw purchases. Pro-gun supporters argue that the responsibility lies with law enforcement."

"Police acknowledge that it is difficult for a gun dealer to detect a straw purchaser. However, they said gun sellers should be a significant part of any solution aimed at curbing straw purchases."

"In issuing the worst-dealers list, which identifies gun suppliers with the highest number of crime-gun traces, the Brady Campaign said the list is not an indication that the store owner is a bad person or a criminal."

Two years after Sept. 11, Jews raise concerns about Patriot Act

"Two years after the USA Patriot Act became law, Jewish groups are still searching for the balance between law enforcement and civil liberties. The passage of the legislation in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks divided Jewish groups who were ambivalent about the legislation from allies in the civil-rights community that immediately sought to have the law revoked."

"The central reason for the Jewish groups’ hesitancy to defend civil liberties — one of the causes Jews generally champion — is that the act’s provisions were designed to target groups viewed as hostile to Jews."

Project ChildSafe, developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and funded by a $50 million grant from the U.S. Justice Department, is providing free cable-style gun locks to local police departments including those in the Hudson Valley .

Gunlocks were distributed by the Town of Wallkill Police Department yesterday and will be handed out “no questions asked” at New Windsor Town Police Headquarters. “Gun locks have become synonymous with gun safety and makes good sense for every gun owner, especially those with young children in the home,” said Police Chief Walter Koury.

The Town of Newburgh Police Department is also planning to hand out the gunlocks next week.

"As in the case of a three-ring circus, you'll never know what will come out of the Ninth Circuit. The lights come on, the music plays, the clowns are funny; they run and jump helter-skelter, apparently without any reason but to elicit a laugh. The most overturned circuit court in the nation has now become merely entertainment for jaded reporters on slow news days. In fact, the ACLU's chief counsel, Mark Rosenbaum, in his closing arguments last week before the Ninth Circuit, let out a comical Freudian slip by calling the court he was arguing before the 'Ninth Circus.' Well, Mark, you should know -- you're the ringmaster."

Then when they found out they couldn't reach over the backs of the governor and lawmakers to run public schools, they issued another historic ruling: Never mind."

Concealed weapons won't be allowed on public buses and the light rail system in St. Louis.

Officials say despite changes to Missouri law they won't allow people to have concealed weapons on transportation run by the Metro organization. That's even after they become legal next month for people with proper permits.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports a 1993 law passed in both Missouri and Illinois already bans firearms in Metro facilities and vehicles.

The same law prohibits drinking, littering, smoking and eating on transit property.

"Dear "TSA Screener:"

"For the record, it's possible these complaints you're hearing about 'violating civil rights' stem from the complainants having read Amendment IV to the U.S. Constitution, which specifies, 'The right of the people to be secure in their persons ... papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.' "Britain's black churches have urged the terrified witnesses of gun crime to use their assemblies as 'reporting centres' to feed vital information through to the police."

"In a radical move to address black-on-black violence and to win community confidence, the churchmen are saying that those reluctant to approach the police can use them as conduits of information. If necessary the sources of information will be kept confidential."

"Though church leaders recognise that many of the gunmen involved are ruthless and have no qualms about intimidating or even shooting informants, they say it is a risk the assemblies must take."

"If the proposed change is enacted, the comprehensive plan would say that lead contamination on the site should be cleaned up; that development should respect the adjacent natural features of the site, namely Ithaca Falls; and that a mix of residential and low-impact commercial uses should be considered for the site. Ithaca Gun Co., now located in King Ferry, was still in operation in Ithaca when the comprehensive plan was drafted in 1971. The company closed its Ithaca operations in the late 1980s but the plan stated the site should remain zoned for industrial use."

"A debate over appropriate punishments for federal crimes and how cases should be pursued by prosecutors has made unlikely foes of conservative judges and Attorney General John Ashcroft."

"When similar cases are handled differently a drug peddler in San Diego might get 12 months in jail while one in Texas is sent away for six years. Ashcroft says he wants more uniformity, but judges say his ideas for achieving that will harm a system already struggling with more cases than it can handle."

"An off-duty St. Louis police officer was taken into custody about 7:15 p.m. Monday after about 4 hours holed up inside his house with a gun as colleagues with tactical gear tried to talk him out."

"Other police identified the man inside as Aaron Moore, assigned as a patrolman in the 8th District."

"Witnesses said Moore came outside of the house with a weapon, causing another officer to fire a bean bag round from a shotgun. Moore was knocked to the ground by the blast and was taken into custody."

"Moore was described by his chief as 'stressed out' over marital problems. He had no hostages and nobody had been reported injured as the standoff continued into the evening."

Only police and military should be allowed to have guns

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The prohibition is general. No clause in the Constitution could by any rule of construction be conceived to give to Congress a power to disarm the people. Such a flagitious attempt could only be made under some general pretense by a state legislature. But if in any blind pursuit of inordinate power, either should attempt it, this amendment may be appealed to as a restraint on both. — William Rawle, A View of the Constitution 125-6 (2nd ed. 1829)
