A hunter shot and killed a grizzly bear Tuesday in Beattie Gulch north of Gardiner in what wildlife officials say was self-defense – the sixth time in recent months a person has shot at a grizzly in Montana.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks said the bear reportedly charged the hunter before the hunter shot it “at close range in self-defense.” FWP said an animal carcass was found near where the bear was killed, and the bear specialists “determined the bear was likely acting defensively.” |

During Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's 2018 confirmation hearing, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D–Calif.) asked him to "reconcile" his conclusion that "assault weapon" bans are unconstitutional with "the hundreds of school shootings using assault weapons that have taken place in recent history." It was a classic Feinstein moment, combining her steadfast support for arbitrary gun laws with blatant misinformation and a logical non sequitur. |

Every skill has a number of foundational tasks that you have to be able to perform and reloads are one of those foundational skills in shooting…up to a point.
We’re certainly inundated with images of people performing them; most shooting courses cover them, and they’re a part of any qualification course of fire, including for practical pistol/practical shooting sports…
…but it’s also the case that most people who have a gun for any reason are never going to be in any situation where life depends on performing one. |

Governor Kristi Noem invited California gun manufacturers and law-abiding gun owners to move to South Dakota to escape California’s gun and ammunition tax , which Governor Gavin Newsom signed as the first such tax in the country.
“Why would anyone want to live in a state where your Second Amendment rights are infringed?” said Governor Noem. “South Dakota has been setting the standard as the most Second-Amendment friendly state in the nation for years. Our firearms industry is thriving. Unlike Governor Newsom, South Dakota respects our God-riven rights. So if you are a California gun manufacturer or law-abiding gun owner, we are ready to help you make the move!” |

Missoula’s public bus service is loosening restrictions on riders carrying firearms after Second Amendment advocates threatened a lawsuit over the policy. The change goes into effect Oct. 1.
Mountain Line spokesperson Olga Kreimer said the organization did not make the decision to roll back its weapons ban lightly. She said the service’s leadership thought being “dragged into a lawsuit” would not be in the best interest of riders.
“We’re making a change in the most straightforward, safe and responsible way we can to comply with the policy and avoid that litigation,” Kreimer said. |

How many parents want to pack heat when pushing their child on a swing?
That question is not as facetious as it seems.
The ongoing legal battle over firearms in New Jersey is now in the sandbox – quite literally.
A recent legal filing by gun-rights groups says individuals should be permitted to carry firearms in such locales as playgrounds, youth sporting events and medical offices.
Phil Murphy says he is “furious” at the suggestion. |

Maryland can’t ban those with gun-carry permits from carrying in large swaths of the state.
That’s the ruling handed down by United States District Judge George L. Russell, a Barack Obama appointee, on Friday. He found many, though not all, of the state’s latest gun-carry restrictions likely violate the Second Amendment. He issued a preliminary injunction blocking enforcement of those restrictions.
“Plaintiffs are correct that the public has a strong interest in upholding constitutional rights and the State is not harmed by an injunction preventing it from enforcing unconstitutional laws,” Judge Russell wrote in Kipke v. Moore. |

Two new gun laws that are set to go into effect in Colorado on Sunday, Oct. 1, will institute a three-day waiting period for purchases and make it easier for victims and their families to sue gun manufacturers and dealers.
The laws, passed by the legislature in April, were among several gun-violence prevention measures signed into law by Gov. Jared Polis this year. Lawmakers also passed a bill expanding the state’s red-flag law, which has already taken effect, plus a fourth measure that generally will require a person to be 21 or older to buy a gun. A federal judge has temporarily blocked that minimum age law amid an ongoing legal challenge. |

A bunch of radical busybodies, unwilling to obey the law passed by the Congress or even their own state legislature, declare themselves a “sanctuary” from the law of the land, refusing to enforce any law that doesn’t meet their learned sense of what’s acceptable.
If you’re a liberal, your mind immediately goes to the “sanctuary counties” popping up across South Carolina and other red states as havens for those with an exaggerated sense of Second Amendment entitlement that has come to define too much of the Republican mindset. One with none of the limits or responsibilities that all our other constitutional rights include. |

The NRA slammed President Biden’s launch of the first-ever federal office to address "gun violence prevention," while criticizing the office’s director, who has repeatedly vowed on social media to help "defeat" the Second Amendment group.
"The Biden administration's new White House Office of so-called 'Gun Violence Prevention' might as well be renamed the 'Federal Office to Disarm Law-Abiding Americans and Defeat the NRA.' One doesn't have to look far into Stefanie Feldman's social media to see biases and agenda: a barrage of over 20 posts aggressively targeting the NRA, combined with promises of ‘big, bold’ executive action on gun control, paints a clear picture," NRA spokesman Billy McLaughlin told Fox News Digital. |

The first Monday in October, the traditional date for the beginning of the U.S. Supreme Court’s term, is almost here: On Oct. 2, 2023, the court will meet after the summer recess, with the biggest case of the term focused on the limits of individual gun rights.
The other core issue for the coming year is a broad reassessment of the power of the administrative state.
Both issues reflect a court that has announced revolutionary changes in doctrine and must now grapple with how far the new principles will reach. |

In May, we wrote about the dramatic events leading up to the historic 2016 presidential election, in which Donald Trump made judicial nominations a centerpiece of his campaign. That article explained how President Trump fortified the U.S. Supreme Court with Originalist appointments and how that in turn led to last year’s pivotal decision in the NRA-supported case New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen. Bruen, by all accounts, has transformed the landscape of Second Amendment litigation, forcing anti-gun activists and politically minded judges to reckon with a world in which the Second Amendment is treated with the same dignity as other fundamental constitutional rights. |

A federal judge filed a preliminary injunction Friday blocking parts of gun control measures that were set to take effect in Maryland Oct. 1 that limit who can get concealed carry handgun permits and where they can be used.
The Gun Safety Act of 2023, signed into law by Gov. Wes Moore in May, prohibits people from carrying guns in schools, hospitals, government buildings, stadiums, museums and liquor stores or other places where alcohol is sold, among other locations. Those who work in law enforcement, security and the military are exempt. |

There are very legitimate concerns about the burden this new system is going to place on the businesses as well as the State Police and the hunting community. Costs will go up and it is unclear what benefits this new law will generate. Albany Democrats have portrayed this new law as a way to improve public safety. However, we know most gun violence comes from those using illegally obtained weapons. This law targets law-abiding gun owners and puts yet another financial burden on already overtaxed businesses and individuals. It’s hard not to look at this as anything more than a punitive fee for access to the Second Amendment. |

Intending to raise some US$160 million per year to help prevent gun violence, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law this week a first-in-the-nation state excise tax on sales of firearms and ammunition.
Due to come into force in July 2024, the California excise tax will add an 11 percent levy on top of the existing federal excise gun and ammo tax, a rate of 10 or 11 percent, depending on the type of weapon. |

Fox News is reporting that President Joe Biden “is planning to sign legislation that explicitly reverses his own administration’s decision to defund school shooting sports courses nationwide,” a reversal of course which indicates the White House’s anti-gun zealotry is wearing thin.
The administration has been under fire through the summer since the June report that there would be new restrictions on the types of equipment hunters can use on federal refuges. |

“Congress overwhelmingly passed a bill to protect federal funding for school hunting and archery courses after the Biden administration interpreted the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to prohibit money from going toward shooting sports activities,” Just The News reported Thursday. “Republican Reps. Mark Green of Tennessee and Richard Hudson of North Carolina introduced the “Protecting Hunting Heritage and Education Act” last month, and it passed the House on Tuesday in a 424-1 vote, with the lone “Nay” coming from Texas Democrat Rep. Veronica Escobar.” |
