On CNN today, White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley blamed Democrats for the shooting a week ago in Kenosha, Wisconsin, that took two lives and wounded a third person. Seventeen-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse allegedly crossed state lines with an AR-15-style gun that was illegally in his possession and, after scuffling with some people, opened fire. Gidley insisted that Rittenhouse acted in self-defense. He blamed Democrats for restraining the police, leading citizens to have to step in. “If you don’t allow police to do their job then the American people have to defend themselves in some way.”

The people he killed were: a convicted child molester and a convicted domestic violence repeat offender, both of whom had served time in prison. (It takes a lot to get prison time in America — especially if you're white, right BLM?) The guy Rittenhouse shot in the arm had a firearms conviction and was coming at him with a gun.

But this was an all-white affair, so liberals had to look at other facts to assign blame/heroic status. Not irrelevant factors, like self-defense, reasonable fear or possibility of escape, but relevant factors like: Who was antifa and who was a Trump supporter? Rittenhouse: GUILTY!

Byrne is one in a coalition of people across the state calling for stricter gun laws in Texas and the country in the aftermath of mass shootings, including the one in Midland-Odessa a year ago. The push is sure to face an uphill climb in the state that has resisted gun safety measures in the past.

While once considered quite paranoid if you believed in preparing your home defense response for anything beyond the lone burglar, recent events make clear that large groups of home invaders, and indeed even large crowds of misfits set on intimidation and chaos, are now a security concern for you and yours. Likewise, there is a growing roster of people who have been accosted while in their vehicles by violent mobs.

A 48-year-old Oregon man said he acted in self defense during the fatal shooting of a supporter of a right-wing group in Portland as he thought he and a friend would be stabbed, Vice News reported on Thursday.

"I had no choice. I mean, I, I had a choice. I could have sat there and watched them kill a friend of mine of color. But I wasn't going to do that," Michael Reinoehl said in a video interview published by Vice News about the Saturday shooting of Aaron Danielson, 39.

Josh Cumbow serves as the Washington County Commonwealth's Attorney. He gave News 5 a brief synopsis of self-defense rights in Virginia whether you're at home, at a business or in public.

"You have a right to self defense if you perceive a direct threat to yourself your life or serious bodily injury, or that of someone with a family member, child or someone like that," said Cumbow.

"And that self defense could even go so far as a deadly force?," News 5 asked. "Conceivably, it could include deadly force. Yes."

Kyle Rittenhouse is going to walk.

This is my conclusion as I emerge, blinking in the light, from the rabbit hole I’ve been down all week of self-defense law, jury-instruction language, charging documents and online, frame-by-frame analysis of the videos of the tragic shootings in Kenosha during street protests on Aug. 25.

A capital city activist group is taking donations to help protect themselves from law enforcement and white supremacists.

The Tallahassee Community Action Committee (TCAC) told Florida Politics they are looking to acquire, among other things, Kevlar vests, self-defense training, CPR training and legal representation.

TCAC has organized several Black Lives Matter protests in recent months, all of which the county has deemed “mostly peaceful.” A weekend incident involving TCAC, however, prompted county leaders to order a state of emergency and countywide curfews to prevent an escalation.

While most of the time, “without evidence” is a quick attempt at flagging a false statement, when it came to the president’s assessment of the Kenosha shooting, it was at best too vague and at worst actually unsupported. That phrase was repeated during Morning Edition coverage Sept. 1, and by NPR’s Twitter account. NPR listener Sam Houff put it well: “The situation is certainly divisive, as referenced in the article. But while the evidence is likely to be interpreted differently by blue and red, it is certainly there! Take this wonderful timeline created by the New York Times.”
