"A $20 million budget shortfall is forcing cuts at U.S. ports of entry that could impact security, MSNBC.com has learned. The deficit has led officials to make a series of security compromises that include replacing INS inspectors with their less-qualified, lower-paid Customs counterparts on heavily trafficked Sundays and holidays. U.S. officials, who announced Tuesday a plan to merge these inspector jobs into a single position, denied that the current cost-saving measures weaken security in any way."

"Two longtime Wisconsin medical marijuana activists are helping to spearhead a Washington D.C. memorial for a New Jersey multiple sclerosis patient and fellow medical marijuana activist who died of complications from the disease on June 7. Jacki Rickert and Gary Storck, from the group, Is My Medicine Legal YET? will be traveling to Washington to memorialize the late Cheryl Miller, and visit congressional offices with other medical marijuana patients and advocates September 22-23, 2003. The two worked closely with Cheryl and her husband Jim, joining them on a number of lobbying trips to Washington, including one in 1999, when Jim Miller was arrested as the foursome blocked the former Georgia Republican Rep. Bob Barr's office doorway, to protest his opposition to medical marijuana. Barr went on to lose a GOP primary in 2002 after the Libertarian Party began airing a TV commercial featuring the seriously ill and paralyzed Cheryl Miller asking Barr why he would keep medical marijuana from her." |

"Got that? This poor mope, Beuck, legally buys a gun, probably some time around 1966-67. He keeps the gun for 15 years or so, without incident, at which time he promptly complies with Chicago's unconstitutional gun ordinance and registers his gun with the City in 1983. He keeps the gun for another decade or so, until 1994, at which time he legally sells it to a cop. Nine years later, and after at least two police officers have ignored the gun ordinance, a career violent criminal (in violation of a half dozen state laws and City ordinances) somehow gets ahold of the gun and kills several coworkers. The cops track down Beuck, now homeless, and ask him about the gun. Beuck cooperates, tells the police what he knows, but because this homeless man cannot now produce records regarding the sale of his gun nine years ago, Beuck gets sent to Cook County Jail on $100,000 bond!"
"You gotta wonder what would have happened if the authorities had shown as much interest in locking up the murderer, Tapia, after any of his more than a dozen arrests as they did in locking away a 58 year old homeless guy who couldn't come up with the paperwork documenting a gun he sold nine years ago." |

"In police jargon, 'CCW' rings as familiar as GTA (Grand Theft Auto), DUI (Driving Under the Influence) or ADW (Assault with a Deadly Weapon). CCW stands for Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and without proper licensing, it's a violation of the law in almost all jurisdictions. But there's good news, too. Some 33 states now have procedures in place that permit citizens with no criminal record and proper training to carry a concealed handgun."
"So it's no small wonder that Para Ordnance, the Canadian-based maker of some fine .45 pistols, has tagged its newest model with the CCW moniker. The state Assembly is attempting to curb accidental handgun shootings in California with a new bill. The 80-member lawmaking body passed it earlier today, requiring new safety designs on semiautomatic handguns sold in the state beginning in 2006.
The bill makes gun manufacturers add indicators that show if there is a bullet in the chamber, or render the gun impossible to fire if the ammunition magazine is not inserted.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"Some people think that the Second Amendment is an outdated relic of an earlier time. Doubtless some also think that constitutional protections of other rights are outdated relics of earlier times. We The People own those rights regardless, unless and until We The People repeal them. For those who believe it to be outdated, the Second Amendment provides a good test of whether their allegiance is really to the Constitution of the United States, or only to their preferences in public policies and audiences. The Constitution is law, not vague aspirations, and we are obligated to protect, defend, and apply it. If the Second Amendment were truly an outdated relic, the Constitution provides a method for repeal. The Constitution does not furnish the federal courts with an eraser." --9th Circuit Court Judge Andrew Kleinfeld, dissenting opinion in which the court refused to rehear the case while citing deeply flawed anti-Second Amendment nonsense (Nordyke v. King; opinion filed April 5, 2004) |
