After years of gathering input from the public and construction efforts, a new shooting range is now open in Grand Traverse County.
Located in Union Township, just south of the intersection of Fife Lake and Supply roads, the range offers 12 lanes for target shooting, with three lanes each at 10, 25, 50 and 100 yards.
Accessible parking and pathways to the shooting stations, target retrievals and vault toilet are available at the site, too.
Range hours are: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through the end of September and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting October 1.
The range will remain open through Nov. 30 or until snowfall, whichever comes first, and then will reopen in spring 2019 when snow is no longer a factor. |

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A man shot a woman he'd just met after she stole his truck and crashed along the Beltway in southwest Houston, police say.
Authorities tell Eyewitness News the man and woman, identified as 33-year-old Christina McCardell, were at a hotel.
While he was inside checking in at the Pearl Inn, McCardell slid over to the driver's seat and sped off in his vehicle.
Police say the man had a gun and when he saw her stealing the truck, he ran out of the lobby and fired at least four shots at her as she drove away.
Submitters note: It is legal in Texas to shoot a fleeing felon in order to prevent loss of property. |

A young, then-pregnant woman, who was justified in killing the intruder who attacked her, is now facing prison time over the incident — all because of a previous marijuana conviction. Krissy Noble, 21, shot and killed Dylan Stancoff using her husband’s gun on December 7 after he broke into her Fort Smith, Ark., home and attacked her, according to ABC News. Stancoff had reportedly tackled Noble, covered her mouth with a hand that she said smelled of chemicals, and then started hitting her in the face. She was able to break free and shoot Stancoff three times before running to a neighbor’s house for help. Noble was eleven weeks pregnant at the time. |

Confirmation hearings for Judge Brett Kavanaugh were off to a rocky launch Tuesday morning on Capitol Hill as Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee seemed more intent on disruption and distraction than on getting down to business, with Fox News suggesting that gun rights v. gun control could be a major issue.
This probably should be no surprise to anybody, considering that anti-gun Senators Charles Schumer and Dianne Feinstein are point Democrats in the Kavanaugh opposition. They do not want the judge elevated to the U.S. Supreme Court for any number of reasons, and his apparent adherence to the Second Amendment is one of them. |

The concept of what constitutes a “packable” rifle has changed significantly for me over the past 35 years. As a 15-year-old camper, I was content to carry a disassembled Savage Arms Model 24 over/under in my external-frame rucksack. During the pre-Sept. 11 portion of my Army life, missions sometimes required me to get a full-caliber rifle into a clandestine environment undetected. I often opted to simply separate the halves of either a 5.56 NATO or 7.62 NATO AR, stowing them in bags or containers that were not as discreet as I would have liked. Smaller, special-purpose guns were available, but they usually left much to be desired when the shooting progressed to a two-way affair.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s critics have blamed him for an understaffed police force and a lack of investment in Chicago’s economically downtrodden neighborhoods, leading to extraordinarily deadly gun violence in the city. But the violence also raised questions, however, about the impact of gun laws. The city does not have the toughest gun laws in the country, as some have claimed. Illinois is ranked eighth among states with the strongest gun laws by the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. |

For iron sight service rifle competition, shooters have the choice of round, square or wedge-shape front sight posts in several widths, configured for ½- or ¼-MOA adjustments. Time constraints are modest in this discipline and so, with the help of shooting jackets, gloves and slings, a precise sight picture is attainable. By comparison, “go-fast” pistol sports such as NRA Action Pistol (Bianchi Cup), 3-Gun, IPSC and USPSA require rapid visual acquisition and for this, fiber optics top the list of front sight options. The same rationale holds true for personal protection handguns. |
