It's totally understandable that Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is touchy about gun violence in her city. The city is a shooting gallery with citizens little more than clay pigeons.

Every time the right kind of shooter (a white guy who isn't living in Chicago, Baltimore or Detroit) shoots people, Democrats and the media howl that something must be done. Action must be taken. Laws must be passed.

The something, the action and the laws suspend the Bill of Rights and never actually punish the killer, but random people whose only crime is owning a gun

A Texas woman shot at two suspected robbers, wounding one, early Tuesday morning when they allegedly reached into her car to grab her purse.

Lachelle Hudgins had just parked outside her home in southwest Houston around 2:30 a.m. when the suspected robbers reached through her driver’s side window, according to KTRK-TV. She told police several other men were also near her parking space.

Hudgins grabbed her gun from her purse and fired the only two shots left in her gun, hitting one of the men.

All of the men ran away when Hudgins fired and the wounded man was found a short time later on the other side of the apartment complex.

He underwent surgery and is expected to face aggravated robbery charges, KTRK reported.

The media should stop using absurdly lazy phrases like “mandatory gun buybacks.” Unless the politician they’re talking about is in the business of selling firearms, it’s impossible for him to “buy back” anything. No government official—not Joe Biden, not Beto O’Rourke, not any of the candidates who now support “buyback” programs—has ever sold firearms.

As Twitchy reported, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot told Sen. Ted Cruz to “keep our name out of your mouth” after he namechecked her city in a tweet about gun control laws and how they don’t work. In response, she tweeted a list of states from where the guns recovered in Chicago come from … if those red states would just adopt Chicago’s tough gun control laws, all would be solved … right?

Mass murder is ugly. Many of us want politicians to lie to us and tell us that the next gun-control law will fix everything.

It won’t.

In fact, the next rules will make it easier for mass murderers to kill us.

Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, clashed in personal terms Wednesday over calls for universal background checks and other gun control measures in the wake of the mass shooting in Texas that left seven dead and at least 25 injured.

Ocasio-Cortez went after Crenshaw for a tweet about a Houston-area woman who used a handgun to defend herself when five men tried to rob her.

“Situations like this story are why we protect the 2nd Amendment,’ Crenshaw tweeted.

Perhaps law-enforcement and politicians should analyze these shootings as Live Practice Drills to see what the common elements are, and to see what they can do to minimize the occurrence of these horrible events.

Recently, even a location (Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern CA) that had a fence and metal detector weapons screening for attendees became a non-gun-free-zone when a criminal cut through a portion of the fence and entered with a rifle. Even with a security and police presence, he managed to kill three and wound thirteen.

So much for signs and fences.

Texas House Democrats are totally united. Sixty-three of the 66 members of the party's House caucus signed a letter Wednesday calling on Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to call a special session of the Legislature to address the rash of gun violence that's marred Texas' summer. As they repeated at news conferences all over the state, they want the governor to "do something."

The Texas Department of Public Safety really is playing with fire by selling guns to its own employees, who then can resell them for profit. The last thing DPS and Texas need is for a gun to leave the agency, only to then be used in a crime.

The agency has sold more than 5,200 guns to its own employees over the past three years. Under state law, police officers leaving their departments are allowed to buy a single service weapon, often as a memento. DPS lets its retiring troopers buy as many as three: a single service weapon and two guns the department is retiring.

Walmart's highly controversial decision to change gun and ammo sale policies is expected to hit local economies with a perhaps unexpected impact.

The retail giant is not only stopping the sales of certain ammunition but discouraging customers from openly carrying in their stores.

As the nation's biggest retailer, these changes come in response to the wave of recent mass shootings across our country, including one last month in El Paso, Texas that killed 22 people in a Walmart store.

Prosecutors have decided not to charge a Maryland homeowner who killed a man he thought was trying to break into his house.

Charles Dorsey acted in self-defense during a perceived home intrusion in July, State’s Attorney Rich Gibson said Tuesday.

News outlets reported that Gerardo “Gary” Espinoza was a guest at a pool party next door when he began banging on the door of Dorsey’s Woodbine home at 1 a.m.

The fastest way to trend on Twitter, and not in a good way, is to say that the right to bear arms is a God-given right.

Texas state Rep. Matt Schaefer established this beyond a doubt in a Twitter thread in the immediate aftermath of the West Texas shooting spree. He said that he wouldn’t use “the evil acts of a handful of people to diminish the God-given rights of my fellow Texans.”

Progressives were aghast at Schaefer’s sentiment, and when actress Alyssa Milano questioned how he possibly could defend it, Texas Senator Ted Cruz jumped in to support Schaefer’s argument (in less obnoxious terms).

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
There are other things so clearly out of the power of Congress, that the bare recital of them is sufficient, I mean the "...rights of bearing arms for defence, or for killing game..." These things seem to have been inserted among their objections, merely to induce the ignorant to believe that Congress would have a power over such objects and to infer from their being refused a place in the Constitution, their intention to exercise that power to the oppression of the people. —ALEXANDER WHITE (1787)
