"We need your help! Please contact President Bush on Thursday, September 9th, 2004, and tell him to renew the assault weapons ban."
"There are only a few days until the assault weapons ban expires on September 13, and our nation will face a new era of criminal and terrorist attacks with assault weapons unless President Bush keeps his campaign promise and gets the law renewed. During his campaign in 2000, President Bush pledged to renew this law. But so far he has done nothing to prevent military style weapons like AK-47s and UZIs from flooding back into our neighborhoods." |

"The fanatic pro-gun lobby represents perhaps the ultimate denial of reality in the service of ideology. A ban on assault weapons passed by Congress 10 years ago is about to expire, and while President Bush says he favors continuing the ban, he's done nothing to back his position and is allowing the hard-right leadership in Congress to bury the issue."
"The ban is not perfect, but people who know the issue best, law-enforcement officials, overwhelmingly support its extension and expansion. Chief William Bratton of the Los Angeles Police Department wrote recently that as 'a 28-year veteran of law enforcement, I have seen firsthand the death and destruction that can be brought by military-style assault weapons.' "Over 70 million additional civilian firearms have been sold since 1990 (3), yet the firearm death rate for children under 15 has dropped 60%. (4) With all those children living in homes containing firearms, if Boxer assumed correctly, the death rate should be much higher for children." ...
"Barbara, why do you want to make firearms more expensive and less affordable to poorer folks who live in inner cities, where there are generally higher crime rates? Isn’t this rather racist and elitist? How are they to defend their children against violent predators? A gun lock may be 'inexpensive' to you, but that is not the case for the little people you profess to care so much for." |

Western Cape police on Saturday destroyed 1 100 firearms that were handed in voluntarily or confiscated.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Riaan Pool said this brought the number of guns destroyed since September 2003 to 5 138.
He said police destroyed guns from time to time to recycle the metal contained in them.
Since April 2003 a total of 6 485 firearms and 1 429 468 rounds of ammunition were confiscated in the Western Cape. During the same period 967 people were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Pool said police test the firearms before destroying to ensure they were not used in crimes that were still under investigation. |
