Brady planning a call-a-thon to "Save the Assault Weapons Ban"

"We need your help! Please contact President Bush on Thursday, September 9th, 2004, and tell him to renew the assault weapons ban."

"There are only a few days until the assault weapons ban expires on September 13, and our nation will face a new era of criminal and terrorist attacks with assault weapons unless President Bush keeps his campaign promise and gets the law renewed. During his campaign in 2000, President Bush pledged to renew this law. But so far he has done nothing to prevent military style weapons like AK-47s and UZIs from flooding back into our neighborhoods."

"The fanatic pro-gun lobby represents perhaps the ultimate denial of reality in the service of ideology. A ban on assault weapons passed by Congress 10 years ago is about to expire, and while President Bush says he favors continuing the ban, he's done nothing to back his position and is allowing the hard-right leadership in Congress to bury the issue."

"The ban is not perfect, but people who know the issue best, law-enforcement officials, overwhelmingly support its extension and expansion. Chief William Bratton of the Los Angeles Police Department wrote recently that as 'a 28-year veteran of law enforcement, I have seen firsthand the death and destruction that can be brought by military-style assault weapons.' "Over 70 million additional civilian firearms have been sold since 1990 (3), yet the firearm death rate for children under 15 has dropped 60%. (4) With all those children living in homes containing firearms, if Boxer assumed correctly, the death rate should be much higher for children." ...

"Barbara, why do you want to make firearms more expensive and less affordable to poorer folks who live in inner cities, where there are generally higher crime rates? Isn’t this rather racist and elitist? How are they to defend their children against violent predators? A gun lock may be 'inexpensive' to you, but that is not the case for the little people you profess to care so much for."

"Federal Drug Enforcement agents say their medical marijuana raid in Roseville should send a message to every other medical pot operation in California, that they're breaking federal law."

"Of course, state law allows for medical marijuana possession and distribution to sick people, and a federal appeals court has said that federal authorities lack the power to go after these medical marijuana shops in California."

"But the U.S. Justice Department has appealed that ruling to the Supreme Court, and meanwhile, the D-E-A isn't slowing down."

"The Clinton Police Department is offering a reward of up to $500 for information leading to the safe recovery of a police service weapon and holster."

"The items were stolen last weekend from the private vehicle of Officer Matt Lorenzen in the 700 block of Melrose Court in Clinton. Police Chief Brian Guy said the investigation into the incident is continuing. He said the weapon, a Heckler and Koch (H&K) model .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun, is black in color and has a serial number of 22-076448."

"Monroe County Coroner David Toumey is hospitalized with a leg wound after accidentally shooting himself while trying to demonstrate gun safety."

"Toumey told The Herald-Times that he was demonstrating gun safety to some people at a Lake Monroe boat ramp Wednesday night when he accidentally shot himself."

"He says that as he checked to make sure his weapon was unloaded, the gun discharged, and a bullet struck him in his left leg. Toumey calls it an unfortunate accident and says he always tries to be very careful when handling guns."

-------
So he claims he checked to ensure his gun was unloaded, but the big, bad gun went off all by itself anyway? It had nothing to do with his finger being on the trigger, perhaps?

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Western Cape police on Saturday destroyed 1 100 firearms that were handed in voluntarily or confiscated.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Riaan Pool said this brought the number of guns destroyed since September 2003 to 5 138.

He said police destroyed guns from time to time to recycle the metal contained in them.

Since April 2003 a total of 6 485 firearms and 1 429 468 rounds of ammunition were confiscated in the Western Cape. During the same period 967 people were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Pool said police test the firearms before destroying to ensure they were not used in crimes that were still under investigation.

"In papers filed in federal court in White Plains, Sean M. Cosby says he suffered permanent injuries from police beatings and the use of stun guns during drug arrests in 2003. Cosby also claims that he contracted a serious foot infection after being "forced to stand and walk barefoot upon a filthy floor' in the booking area at Police Headquarters. "The results usually aren't as pretty as the 100-out-of-100 scores regularly posted with the 12-, 20- and 28-gauge shotguns. There are blemishes during the .410 competition, which is why it often separates the crowned champion from the rest of the field." ...

"If you call breaking 1,195 out of 1,200 clay targets good, then Parsons has achieved his goal. His .410 average last year was 99.59 out of a possible 100 - the highest in the history of skeet shooting."

About that particular bill, I just don't think the state should be in the business of telling local governments what they should do when it comes to their local ordinances and how they decide to regulate their public safety issues. It should be left up to the local community to make a decision on whether or not they want to allow people to have guns in their homes." ...

"If someone breaks in your home now and you were to use a weapon on that person, you have a legitimate self-defense claim. If somebody invades your home, in my opinion, you should use whatever means necessary to protect your home and most importantly your family. "For her summer vacation this year, Jane Roth decided to take on the gun industry."

"She headed out of Napa up to Portland, Ore. in mid-August, then hit the road again as soon as she arrived. Boarding a decked-out hot pink RV, Roth crisscrossed the western U.S. to imprint her message -- that the federal assault weapon ban is set to expire on Sept. 13 -- indelibly in people's minds."

"Roth, who heads the California council of a gun control organization, Million Mom March, has been organizing press conferences and pressuring lawmakers to extend the ban. Whether her efforts will pay off remains to be seen." ...

"Roth said she became involved in gun control because her son was murdered with a handgun. She said she believes there will be bigger loopholes if the federal law doesn't get extended."

Notice that her son's death had nothing to do with the "assault" weapons ban. We also wonder had her son been killed with a baseball bat, would this woman campaign vigorously for baseball bat and blunt object control? Wouldn't she be better off campaigning for criminal control?

"The recent killing of Indianapolis police officer Jake Laird has pushed to the forefront the dangers created by the manufacturing and dissemination of assault weapons to civilians."

"Kenneth Anderson killed Laird with an assault rifle after purchasing the military-style semiautomatic a year ago in what was defined as a legal transaction."

"Anderson first killed his mother, then shot four officers who responded to the shooting spree."

"The incident caused law enforcement personnel to push for training on similar weapons. Fighting fire with fire is an understandable response. Most metropolitan police forces already are trained on assault weapons."

"But the ultimate solution should be to extinguish the fire."

"Michael Wayne Hopkins, 41, appeared before a Spokane County commissioner on Monday and was ordered held on a $500,000 bond."

"Hopkins has worked as a police officer in Omak, Northport, Dayton and as a corrections officer at the Stevens County Jail, according to Spokane County sheriff's spokesman Dave Reagan. Hopkins also was employed as a guard at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla."

"He was arrested Friday by Spokane County sheriff's deputies on two counts each of first-degree rape of a child and first-degree molestation of a child."
