"When night falls, Charlie Hackett climbs the steps to his boarded-up window, takes down the plywood, grabs his 12-gauge shotgun and waits. He is waiting for looters and troublemakers, for anyone thinking his neighborhood has been abandoned like so many others across the city. Two doors down, John Carolan is doing the same on his screened-in porch, pistol by his side. They are not about to give up their homes to the lawlessness that has engulfed New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina."

"'We kind of together decided we would defend what we have here and we would stay up and defend the neighborhood,' says Hackett, an Army veteran with a snow-white beard and a business installing custom kitchens." ...

"Of all the bad news from New Orleans, the most disturbing has been the reports of spreading disorder, with looting, marauding gangs and even sniper fire at helicopters and rescue workers. Americans sometimes expect their government to do far too much--such as ensure low gasoline prices--but they do have a right to expect that it will at least provide for the safety of its citizens, even or perhaps especially in a crisis."

"One reason for the New Orleans breakdown is the size of the calamity, whose growing severity caught nearly everyone by surprise. ..." ...

"There seems to be some confusion in terms of terminology on TV. People with no food and water who are walking into supermarkets and taking food and water off the shelves are not criminal, they are sane. "There are at least four variations of this game at the fair this year. The idea is to use a water gun to squirt a target, which, in turn, either inflates a balloon or sends a colorful plastic animal/car up a sliding scale. The first player to get the balloon to explode or move the animal/car to the top of the slide wins a prize. The balloon explodes (yes!) or an annoying buzzer/alarm sounds. The prize depends on the number of people who play, and at least two players are required. I didn't play this game because there weren't enough people around who wanted to play." ...

Giuseppe Graffagnino, 42, brandished the gun above his head as he ranted at owner Susan Nesbitt: "My rods are worth £200 each - more than your dog. I could shoot it.".

Police called by Mrs Nesbitt to Cotswold Water Park in Cirencester, Glos, found he also had a rifle, cannabis and a CS gas canister, magistrates at Cheltenham were told.

Graffagnino, of Hartcliffe, Bristol, admitted possessing a loaded air weapon, the pot and gas and using threatening words and behaviour.

He was given 100 hours' community punishment in an 18-month order and sent on an anger management course.

A BRITISH woman has been raped twice at gunpoint on the Greek island of Zakynthos.

The 20-year-old is the seventh sex attack victim at the popular holiday destination this summer.

A "well-built Briton" is said to have forced his way into her hotel room in the resort of Laganas over the weekend.

Police believe the gun may have been fake. All the island's rape victims are British. The latest is from Liverpool.

Only one suspect, an Albanian, has been arrested so far over an assault on a 24-year-old.

On the same night three Brits targeted a 21-year-old after a party.

The island's prosecutor is probing a series of staged orgies and sex competitions among boozed-up holidaymakers.

On a Friday morning in downtown Guatemala City, a bus had just left the main terminal when it stopped to pick up two young men waiting on a corner. Although they blended in easily among their fellow passengers, the pair were in fact members of the notorious Central American street gang M-18. Armed with handguns, they were about to stage a hold-up of the bus when they were pre-empted by rivals from another gang who had boarded earlier. An angry discussion ensued as to who had the right to rob the passengers, which quickly escalated into gunfire that left one gang-member dead and two passengers injured." ...
