A Woman’s Right to Choose

"A woman has the right to choose. Isn’t that what everyone (especially the media) has been screaming for years? Well, I believe that, to an extent. A woman has the right to choose many things. A woman can choose what she wants to wear, what she wants to eat, where she wants to shop, what she wants to carry, and various other things. Yes, you read that correctly, the right to keep and bear arms does not just apply to men."

"Unfortunately, many women don’t see it that way. Many women look at guns as scary weapons, instead of a great means of self-defense. Instead of choosing the right to arm themselves, women take useless self-defense classes. I am a strong believer that self-defense classes often cause more harm than good. ..." ...

Klinkenborg's 'Complaint': NRA Makes It Tough to Limit Individual Rights

"There's a certain irony to my column today. The author whose op-ed piece I'm about to criticize grew up hunting and shooting in Iowa, and still owns several guns. I grew up in Jewish neighborhoods in the Bronx and Queens where about the only concealed items were tzitzis - undergarments men wear to remind them of Biblical commandments. I've never owned a gun and my forays into shooting have been limited to Boy Scout camp and one adult session at a trap range - or was it skeet?"

"Yet in his in his NY Times column of today, Once a Progressive State, Minnesota Is Now a Fief of the N.R.A., Verlyn Klinkenborg, a member of the Times editorial board, condemns Minnesota's concealed carry laws, whereas I support them." ...

... "But the last straw for American defenders of the God-given right to self-defense may have been the case of Melvin Spaulding, 71, arrested for attempted murder and held without bail in 2003 after he ran to the defense of a 63-year-old friend and neighbor being beaten by thugs in front of his home in St. Petersburg, Fla. -- shooting one of the assailants."

"In the end, charges were dropped and Mr. Spaulding's firearm was returned to him. But Floridians had had enough."

"In April 2005, with a lobbyist for the National Rifle Association at his side, Gov. Jeb Bush signed a bill making it clear that victims have a right to defend themselves on the street, meeting 'force with force' without fear of being prosecuted." ...

"I have a cartoon posted on my wall. ... I shall attempt to describe it:"

"Two men are seen standing next to and setting up a large video camera. The camera is pointed at a rifle sitting on a stand on a table. One man is saying, 'It’s an assault rifle. When it slinks off to kill someone we'll catch it on film.'"

"I see this cartoon daily and I laugh at it all the time ... Clearly there's still some people who honestly believe that these inanimate metal objects are capable of independent thought and action. You can read about some of these people at the New York Times. The editorial is titled, 'The Toll of Small Arms.' Are there people who read these things and actually believe them?" ...

"As Congress reconvenes this week after its summer-Labor Day recess, it faces its last chance to enact certain firearm rights legislation before the national elections in November."

The eyes and ears of the Nation’s 80 million law-abiding gun owners focus now on Capitol Hill for the next two months."

"Although this 109th Congress already has enacted some constructive legislation, such as the Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which President George W. Bush signed into law last year, much work still needs to be done."

"One matter Congress should get to work on right away is the proposed District of Columbia Personal Protection Act. This measure would repeal the outrageous District of Columbia gun ban. ..." ...

"I think gun rights people need to recognize that gun control is also as American as venison pie, if you will. Gun regulation is just as American as gun ownership. -- Saul Cornell"

"Professor Saul Cornell has written a masterful and compelling story of American history in his new book, A Well-Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control in America. Cornell's thoroughly researched book examines the Founding Fathers' concerns about the role of guns in the militia and follows the twists and turns of the competing ideologies about guns through the 19th century and beyond. Cornell's critically acclaimed book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of guns in America and the so-called 'gun rights' movement." ...

"Imagine if you can a 'Second Amendment' policy think tank created at Ohio State University funded by the Joyce Foundation. Do you think it would have any potential anti-gun bias? You would if you knew that the Joyce Foundation funds anti-gun efforts, such as Toby Hoover's Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence."

"It should come as no surprise that OSU Professor Saul Cornell (biography) has written a book A Well Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control in America, which basically argues that the founding fathers of our country were so caught up in the word 'regulate' that they really wanted to see guns in the hands of 'the people' regulated." ...

"'Based on the history of their relationship and of the residence, possibly, we're feeling that it could be some domestic violence involved in this situation,' said Maj. Crowe."

"Police say Branch had an extensive criminal record that included arrests for drugs and stalking."

"Detectives questioned and released Hayes. Police will turn the case over to the Marion County prosecutor's office for review. Hayes could still face charges."

"Overturning a ruling by a Pima County Superior Court judge, a three-judge Tucson panel of the Arizona Court of Appeals said a murder defendant awaiting trial in a 2004 homicide can cite the new law in his trial."

... "The stakes have changed this crazy and violent year. After the New Year's Day massacre of the Harvey family, the slaughter of the Tucker/Baskervilles a few days later, the recent abduction of Emily 'Kate' Robertson and Wednesday's shooting death of 60-year-old Holt Smith in the East End, allegedly by two teen robbers, no longer can residents assume that robbers, burglars and rapists are going to let them live." ...

"That's why our legislators must adjust the state's self- and home-protection laws so criminals violating our dwellings and lives will be the ones at risk. As it is now, if Anne had a gun Friday night and used it, she would have faced prosecution because it could be argued the burglar/robber was trying to get away." ...

"I am writing in response to 'Cars kill more people than handguns at Virginia Tech' (CT, Aug. 30) and 'Authors of handgun opinions are unaware of state law' (CT, Aug. 30), as I feel both authors were a bit out of touch with what the initial authors who inspired their writings were trying to say. I would like to thank one author, who reminded us that we would be expelled for carrying a handgun onto campus."

"Also, reminding us of crime in Washington D.C., does not evade the point made about students who have handguns engaging in a shootout on campus with an escaped convict, putting more students in greater danger. ... As an owner of two hunting rifles, any label of myself as a hoplophobe would be unwise." ...

"After the fear, and dare I say, panic from the events of Aug. 21, it is absolutely mind-boggling to see the opinions of Bradford Wiles ('Unarmed and vulnerable,' Aug. 31)."

"I once worked for an out-of-touch manager who gave rather absurd directions. My colleagues and I would do as directed and dubbed it 'malicious compliance,' knowing the task to be inane and the manager's foibles would soon be apparent."

"The editors of this page must have printed this commentary if for no other reason than malicious compliance. .."

Their argument typically is not based on a situation where a private citizen actually used a gun to prevent a murder or some other tragedy, but rather is always what might have been."

"Wiles also suggests that if we allowed him and other college students to carry guns on grounds, his and others' implied 'fear of helplessness' would be alleviated."

Since the incident, many parents and bloggers on The Citizen's Web site have questioned the school system's response and whether any students were in danger because Kittrell was allowed to walk into the school on the first day of classes."

"With a few notable exceptions."

"Take gun control. ... Rendell has reiterated his support for legislation barring anyone from acquiring more than one handgun a month." ...

"Swann, meanwhile, touting his 'sportsmen's philosophy' on gun owners' rights, has argued it is wrong-headed to impose new restrictions on law-abiding gun owners."

"A better solution, he said, is stronger enforcement of laws coupled with changes aimed at holding straw purchasers and others who knowingly provide guns to criminals liable for crimes committed with those guns." ...

"I was taken aback by the comments in Wednesday's letter, 'It's not that hard.' The letter writer lumps together the so-called 'solutions' to biting dogs and guns."

"He could not have chosen two more opposite subjects. There are already laws in place regarding dog bites. Muzzling all dogs while they are out in public is not the solution. Perhaps better training of owners and their dogs is more to the point."

"My biggest gripe is his statement, 'Guns (pistols, rifles) used to shoot humans.' I would assume by that statement that he is not a gun owner and is probably very anti-gun ownership." ...

Resistance to sudden violence, for the preservation not only of my person, my limbs, and life, but of my property, is an indisputable right of nature which I have never surrendered to the public by the compact of society, and which perhaps, I could not surrender if I would. — JOHN ADAMS
