A Matter of Choice

"Common wisdom has it that a shotgun is the best gun to use for home defense. This advice is often supplemented with such encouraging comments as, 'You don’t need to aim, just point it in the general direction.' ...

"Let's take a look at these shotgun myths. Shot loads do spread but as a general rule do so at the rate of one inch per yard after the first three yards. This means that at 12 feet you have two inches of shot with which to hit anything—not quite a shower of doom in the average apartment or domicile. The 'no need to aim' comment simply allows rationalization for not practicing, which gives mental comfort while believing you might never have to shoot." ...

Gun Control: Is It to Be Trusted?

"Certainly arguments can be raised that no criminal or mentally unbalanced individual should have access to guns. Between 1,500 and 2,000 deaths occur each year through the use of firearms."

"Quite understandably, sensational news stories regarding shooting rampages in schools, universities, churches, and even our mass transit system have only exacerbated our fear of guns."

"However, there is also the flip side, the gun-owners' side ... Historically, while many each year may perish from the use of guns, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, die as a result of having lived under totalitarian regimes across the world where guns among the civilian populations are expressly forbidden."

"Not an original concept, but worth the discussion."

"It's time to pull out. The death toll is just too high. We need to withdraw and let the people in the streets there just duke it out themselves. Self governance, right? May the strongest win. Survival of the fittest."

"One hundred twenty five deaths just this summer alone. That's twice the death toll of American military personnel in Iraq during the same time period."

"So it makes sense to get out, right?"

"Did you know I was talking about Chicago? The city where CCW is ILLEGAL, meaning citizens have no right to carry self defense sidearms for their self protection. They are sitting ducks ..." ...

"Tonight, Barack Obama is attending a fundraiser in Newark, New Jersey. I truly hope he uses this opportunity to speak about Bukhari Washington and the tragic lunacy of allowing civilians to possess assault weapons legally."

"Who is Bukhari Washington? ..." ...

"Then, on August 14, Bukhari Washington was killed as he lay in bed. A bullet shot accidentally from a semiautomatic assault rifle in the apartment below him went up through his pillow and ended his life. The 19 year-old neighbor who shot him had no prior criminal record; it appears to have been a horrible accident." ...

"Tired of worrying that it's unsafe to walk at night or let children play outside by day, some residents in Hollywood's Royal Poinciana neighborhood are calling for residents to take up arms in the area north of downtown."

"Thursday night, the civic association heard from a local security firm that teaches self-defense, Taser training, pepper-spray use, concealed-weapons laws and handgun safety."

"At the sometimes-tense meeting, residents also discussed other self-defense strategies ..."

"'It's not like we're saying we need an armed militia,' said Jack David, the association president. 'It's more like get trained in self-defense and if someone comes up to rob you, you can at least defend yourself.'" ...

"She didn't raise a musket above her head during her speech at the Republican National Convention, and there have not (yet?) been cries of 'from my cold dead hands' on the campaign trail, but for all the renewed enthusiasm among the pro-gun voting block, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin might as well have done both."

"Many Americans are coming to the realization that Sarah Palin is truly 'one of us', but perhaps no others saw it as quickly as did America's gun owners."

"Unlike Mitt Romney, who helped pass an 'assault weapons' ban in Massacheusetts, and only decided to join the NRA when it was time to run for President, Palin is a life-long NRA member. ..." ...

"At a campaign event here Friday, Barack Obama ran headlong into the one of the issues that dogs him in this battleground state."

"'There are rumors going around that . . . you're going to take away our guns,' said Joan O'Neil, a resident of tiny Susquehanna in northeastern Pennsylvania, a big-time area for hunting." ...

"'I believe in the Second Amendment, and if you are a law-abiding gun owner you have nothing to fear from an Obama administration,' Obama said. 'This has been peddled again and again. Here's what I believe: The Second Amendment is an indvidual right. . . people have the right to bear arms. But I also believe there is nothing wrong with some common-sense gun safety measures.'" ...

KABA Note: Obama has previously stated that he considered the pre-Heller DC gun ban to be a 'reasonable restriction'.

"The Northland has a chance to send a new attitude to Madison ... I am Vern Johnson, and I will be just that. I have heard from a large number of voters in the 73rd District who have been aching for a change. There are many discouraged voters, who have despaired in the face of the local and state 'machine', believing that their vote won't matter. To you I say, now is your chance! Rise up! You have a renewed opportunity to see your vote really count."

"I am pro-family, pro-life, pro-Working Family, pro-business, pro-hunting, pro-concealed carry. I am a member of the NRA ... a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club, an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman, and the strongest defender of the Second Amendment. ..." ...

"I would like to applaud the efforts of New York state Assemblyman Greg Ball. Assemblyman Ball is a lifelong sportsman and strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Since being elected to the Assembly, our assemblyman has vociferously fought against overreaching anti-gun proposals, and supported law-abiding gun owners statewide by taking on microstamping."

"In 2007, Ball was honored by the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association as 'Assemblyman of the Year' and in 2008, as 'Legislator of the Year' by the [NRA]. Card-carrying members of both organizations like myself thank him for his staunch and ongoing support of the Second Amendment. By standing up for our rights and fighting the good fight, he has earned his second term ..."

"Government crackdowns on journalists are a true threat to democracy. As the Republican National Convention meets in St. Paul, Minn., this week, police are systematically targeting journalists. I was arrested with my two colleagues, Democracy Now! producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar, while reporting on the first day of the RNC. I have been wrongly charged with a misdemeanor. My co-workers, who were simply reporting, may be charged with felony riot." ...

"The officers, Eric Reyell, Gregory Hafensteiner and Andrew Karaskiewicz, however, were cleared of allegations that they beat suspect Donald Randolph, attorneys said." ...

"[Police union president] Hamilton said the officers were rushed back to the road after the incident and returned later to file paperwork. The use of force form was simply forgotten, he said."

"Mark Marchiafava says he’s earned the right to wear his .357-caliber Magnum pistol in a hip holster in Gonzales.

"And, he says at a local mall, city residents paid him to demonstrate that right."

"'I wish the taxpayers of Gonzales knew just how much money it is,' the 55-year-old Marchiafava adds."

"In January 2006, the longtime Baton Rouge resident was at the same mall, wearing the same pistol, when a Gonzales police officer asked him why he was carrying a gun."

"Marchiafava says he told the officer that non-felons can legally carry firearms that are not concealed."

"That exchange led to Marchiafava's arrest on a count of illegal carrying of a weapon. ..."
