Responsible gun owners defend themselves, but you don’t hear it on the news. Instructor Davi Cole talks about three new examples.
First story-There is the roar of a hurricane outside but then you hear a different sound. Someone is breaking into your home at 11 at night.
Second story- You just withdrew some cash at the ATM. You’re walking home from the shopping center with your young son. A man hits you in the back of the head with a rock.
Third story- You’re set for hurricane Harvey to arrive. It is hard to travel because of the water covering the roads. You’re asleep in your darkened home when you hear someone else inside.
What would you do in these situations? Text and podcast available at the link. (16 minutes)

On Tuesday the Board of Supervisors made it illegal to use or sell mixed exploding targets in a number of circumstances, though the revised ordinance allows for a number of exemptions. As originally proposed, the ordinance banned the use and sale of all exploding targets in unincorporated Pima County, and would have made it illegal to even possess “chemical or material intended to be used as an exploding target.” |

The virulently anti-gun group The Trace sent an e-mail blast to its members last week, alerting them to what it said was the danger of an overly and unnecessarily armed American citizenry:
Jennifer Mascia [a member of “TeamTrace”] pulled some numbers from the Small Arms Survey, which gauges gun stockpiles in the hands of civilians, law enforcement, and militaries around the world. She found that with an estimated 270 million firearms owned by everyday Americans, civilians own 70 times more weapons that all police and military services combined. |

A Jubilee Sunday marked the 80th anniversary of the opportunity to “bring your gun and have some fun” through the St. Joseph County Conservation and Sportsman Club. The club had food, activities ranging from a bouncy house to a long range rifle contest, and a special ceremony to mark eight decades of promoting conservation, fishing, hunting and safe, ethical participation in the shooting sports. Leslie York, recording secretary and shotgun co-director, said it was amazing that the club had been around 80 years – the same as the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. |

In 2013, Defense Distributed uploaded computer aided design (CAD) files and made them freely available to the public. With the proper equipment and knowledge, someone could use the CAD files to create a 3D-printed gun. The government quickly ordered the files removed (under threat of severe penalties) because it determined that the files ran afoul of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), which prevent people from communicating to foreign persons “technical data” about constructing certain arms. |

Klint Kelley left Chicago for rural Arkansas as teenager, hoping to get away from gangs and violence he’d known as city life. But federal prosecutors say as an adult, Kelley stayed connected to his hometown by trafficking guns. Kelley, 27, was arrested in Chicago Ridge on Sunday after driving 10 hours from his home in tiny Malvern, Arkansas, to hand off a cache of eight guns — including five assault rifles — in a sting operation four months in the making. His customer was a childhood friend and two-time convicted felon who had turned informant for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Some Iowa sheriffs say an increase in the number of non-professional permits to carry handguns, coupled with new or recent gun laws in the state, have increased safety risks in their counties. They point to provisions in the new Iowa Omnibus Gun Law, adopted this year, that decreases the punishment for carrying a firearm while intoxicated and increases the ability to use a stand-your-ground defense when firing a gun at someone else.

America’s oldest firearm company, Remington Arms, celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2016 with an impressive array of commemoratives. As pretty as they are, one of the most graceful 19th century firearms ever assembled by the original Ilion, N.Y., factory was the New Model 1889 side-by-side shotgun, with its twin, distinctively curved “C”-shaped hammers. This was the last of Remington’s exposed-hammer doubles, a series that started with the Model 1873 Whitmore “Hammer Lifter” that utilized a European-style, tang-mounted lever to open the breech and concluded with the Model 1889 that—while not the rarest—remains a classic example of late-Victorian American sporting shotguns.

Between 1866 and 1934, one name stood above all others in American shotgun production. Parker Brothers’ pieces represented the epitome of craftsmanship and quality, and they were highly desired and cherished. The 20,000 shotguns that Parker manufactured had nine different grades of quality, so there was something for everyone. The ninth grade—the highest grade that they produced—was available from the catalog by special order only. It wasn’t until 1929 that one of those guns was manufactured, and it was called the Invincible. There were only three Invincibles ever produced. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
For, in principle, there is no difference between a law prohibiting the wearing of concealed arms, and a law forbidding the wearing such as are exposed; and if the former be unconstitutional, the latter must be so likewise. But it should not be forgotten, that it is not only a part of the right that is secured by the constitution; it is the right entire and complete, as it existed at the adoption of the constitution; and if any portion of that right be impaired, immaterial how small the part may be, and immaterial the order of time at which it be done, it is equally forbidden by the constitution. [Bliss vs. Commonwealth, 12 Ky. (2 Litt.) 90, at 92, and 93, 13 Am. Dec. 251 (1822) |
