Former Rep. Beto O'Rourke of Texas is on a mission: Revive his failing presidential campaign by exploiting mass shootings to campaign for gun control. The candidate is proposing to restrict private gun sales, ban “assault weapons,” and more. But O’Rourke’s ideas aren’t so popular back home.

Texas lawmaker Matt Schaefer offered up a unique counter-argument against expanding background checks, sparking controversy when he tweeted: “Ending private gun transactions like Beto wants to do will hit undocumented people hard. It will make vulnerable people less safe,” as part of a larger thread on the importance of gun rights for self-defense.

Does the Second Amendment protect an individual right to gun ownership, or is it a collective right that can and should be heavily regulated by the state?

In light of recent debates about mass shootings and gun control, that argument—which has been at the heart of many conversations about gun control—was fleshed out by Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Chris Murphy, D-Conn.

As The Daily Wire reported yesterday, the comically leftist Board of Supervisors for the city of San Francisco took it upon itself to deem the nation's oldest continually operating civil rights organization a "domestic terrorist organization." That organization, of course, would be the National Rifle Association (NRA) — a group originally founded in 1871, following the nadir of the Civil War, to help promote rifle marksmanship.

“We have an opportunity today to make a true impact on the effects that illegal firearms have in our commonwealth, but we cannot hesitate to take this opportunity to save lives,” said Rep. Chynah Tyler, a committee member who has sponsored a handful of bills aimed at preventing gun violence. “I’m optimistic that after today’s hearing we will be in a position to put a comprehensive package together to acknowledge that black and brown lives matter, while not infringing on residents’ Second Amendment rights.”

National groups on both sides of the gun control issue are pouring money into Virginia legislative races, with the NRA making an unusually large donation to a Republican leader and Everytown for Gun Safety escalating its contributions to Democrats.

Everytown's Action Fund said Thursday morning that it was spending another $438,000 to help turn the Virginia legislature blue in November, on top of $135,000 in digital ad buys it announced last month. The gun control group founded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has promised to spend $2.5 million this year in Virginia, where all 140 seats in the GOP-conrolled state legislature are on the November ballot and the balance of power is at stake.

Gun control is a top concern for college-aged voters, so College Pulse, a survey and data analytics company, polled students from across the country to gain insight into their thoughts on firearms.

Released on August 28, the poll found the vast majority of students, 93 percent, favored requiring universal background checks for all gun purchases. At times, the general majority of a poll can be swayed if one demographic heavily sides a certain way. However, in this case, political persuasion made little difference.

Ohio’s new law governing the use of deadly force in self-defense could be put into play in the case of the homeowner who shot two 17-year-old boys to death in his detached garage.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley said Wednesday that she believes the man murdered the teens. Whaley said she hopes prosecutors find a way to bring charges against the property owner.

Several new laws went into effect this month in Texas. One of those includes lifting the ban on carrying brass knuckles, which had been outlawed since 1918.

Carrying clubs, brass knuckles and self-defense wild kat keychains are now legal after Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 446.

The law defines knuckles as "any instrument that consists of finger rings or guards made for the purpose of inflicting serious bodily injury or death by striking a person with a fist enclosed in the knuckles."

Joel McNally's Aug. 24 column shows a true lack of understanding of the principles that this country was founded on. The founders believed that our right to self defense was a right that came with the laws of nature and nature's God. Richard Henry Lee, a signer of the Constitution and a president of the Continental Congress, said that ALL citizens should be at all times armed and should be taught, especially when young, how to use them.

Walgreens joined a growing number of retailers asking customers not to openly carry guns in its stores Thursday, even where it’s legal.

Walmart and Kroger made the same request of its customers earlier this week.

The request to not open carry comes after increasing pressure on businesses to take action to prevent potential mass shootings at stores and workplaces.

We talked with a gun expert at Bud’s Gun Shop & Range in Lexington.

If the idea of banning the 4 percent would be to stop murder, there would a ban on all guns. Does the gang violence in Chicago with handguns not matter as much as the victims in school shootings from rifles? Besides, 94 percent of mass public shootings happen in gun-free zones. Furthermore, people are 4.3 times more likely to be murdered with knives than guns (FBI, 2016). Additionally, guns do save lives being used 2.5 million times a year for self defense. Also, guns were only responsible for 1.3 percent of deaths between 1999-2013, with the US only 28th in international homicide rates. People are 21.5 times more likely to die of heart disease.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
In our inner cities, where firearms are outlawed, only outlaws are armed. When our "philosopher kings" sit back and do nothing, this is the tyranny and terror of "gun control." —CHARLTON HESTON
