"'Why the Free Market Works and Other Half-Baked Theories Don't,' reads the subtitle on the dust jacket."

"So what? And what does that have to do with gun rights?"

"Like the saying goes, it’s not about guns, it’s about freedom. And Freedomnomics, by economist and author John Lott, Jr., does much to illustrate the relationship between free markets and liberty." ...

"'WHY NOT Have A Pro-Gun Law,' is possibly the longest article we have ever published. It may well be also the most important article we have ever published."

"The 'call to arms' which ends the story, urging all firearms enthusiasts to write to the Director of the Alcohol & Tobacco Tax Unit,Treasury, Washington 25, D. C., to protest new revised federal regulations in the gun law field is a little like Paul Revere's 'one if by land, two if by sea.' Only now it isn't the 'British are coming,' it is the bureaucrats." ...

"The September 1957 issue of GUNS Magazine is now online. Go to page 22 to read the entire article in question, which brings to light much information I had not previously been aware of ..." ...

"The famous movie quote 'Fasten your seat belts; it's going to be a bumpy ride' could well describe our near future. Those in power are not friendly to us. There are already panicked cries of impending bans of one kind or another."

"'Which gun or guns should I buy before the ban?' is a common question at gun shows and gun clubs. Well, the best defense is a good offense. You should be sending money to gun rights support groups--all of them--and becoming a member. But it doesn't hurt to hedge your bets and stock up on the 'likely suspects' either, just in case."

"Well, there is a way to do both." ...

"In his 30 years as a gunsmith, John Blauvelt of the hamlet of Wallkill has seen it all — thousands of rifles, shotguns and pistols with all kinds of ailments."

"Year after year, hunters seem to seek him out the day before or after the first day of hunting season with a rifle or shotgun that doesn't work."

"'You don't want to come into my shop (or any other gunsmith) the week before big-game season starts because we get backed up,' Blauvelt said."

"That's why it's a good idea to ensure your rifle and shotgun are in optimal working order as soon as possible. In a recent interview, Blauvelt shared his checklist of absolute 'to-dos' related to gun care." ...

... "The study also documented a change in suicide method. In 1990, guns accounted for more than half of all suicides among young females. By 2004, though, death by hanging and suffocation became the most common suicide method. It accounted for about 71 percent of all suicides in girls aged 10-14; about half of those aged 15-19; and 34 percent between 20-24." ...

"... It also said the suicide methods suggest that prevention focused solely on restricting access to pills, weapons or other lethal means may be of limited success." [emphasis added] ...

Submitter's Note: This may be obvious to us, but it'll be news to grave-dancers who don't care to focus on the real causes of suicide.

"'The metropolitan Washington, D.C. public overwhelmingly rejects DC’s handgun ban as unconstitutional by a margin of nearly nine to one,' gun rights expert John M. Snyder noted here this morning."

"Snyder based his claim on an internet survey conducted early this week by the Express, a free tabloid newspaper distributed Monday thru Friday by The Washington Post, a local daily broadsheet."

"When asked, 'Do you think DC's tough ban on handgun ownership is unconstitutional,' 89 percent of the 2,034 respondents answered 'yes' and only 11 percent stated 'no.'" ...

"A case challenging the ban on private handgun ownership in the U.S. capital could lead to the first ruling by the Supreme Court since 1939 on the rights of Americans to bear arms."

"Officials from the District of Columbia government this week asked the high court to agree the city's 31-year-old law banning private possession of handguns is constitutional."

"Supporters and opponents of the law said the case could have far-reaching legal and political importance in affecting the nation's gun laws."

"D.C. officials said a U.S. appeals court was wrong in its precedent-setting ruling in March that broadly interpreted an individual's constitutional right ... to bear arms, and that concluded the law violated those rights.

"Yesterday, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty made good on his promise to appeal Parker v. the District of Columbia to the Supreme Court. ..."

"Assuming the court hears the case (the odds are very high), Mr. Fenty's main problem is his argument. It relies heavily on a misreading of the Supreme Court's last gun case, 1939's U.S. v. Miller. Mr. Fenty interprets Miller to mean that only state militia members have the right to bear arms. In Miller, the Supreme Court sided against a man who'd been convicted of possessing a sawed-off shotgun. The court did in fact note that the Second Amendment was written to protect militias. However, the court also observed that 'the Militia comprised all males physically capable of acting in concert for the common defense.'" ...

Thus enters the 900 pound regulatory agency, [BATFE also known as ATF]. Now this agency is supposed to be working for us, We The People, yet it is doing everything but that. Since 2002, 85 percent of American firearms manufacturers have been forced to close their doors. Additionally, from 1994 to 2005, 80 percent of firearms dealers have been forced out of business. Who is doing this? Your BATFE! People, they mean to get your firearms!"

Students and faculty debated those questions and more at Dickinson College’s second amendment debate. Both pro and anti gun messages were debated in the hopes to find a real solution to gun violence.

The series was apart of the Clarke Forum, a weekly discussion about contemporary issues.

"What is needed is maximum enforcement of existing federal and Ohio laws concerning transfer of firearms to minors. Ohio law specifies no handgun may be transferred to a person under 21 and no gun may be transferred to anyone under 18. Additionally, pending legislation ... would allow more potentially dangerous people to be screened out of the purchase process if it becomes law. Such a measure might have prevented the Virginia Tech shootings and others." ...
