"Inquiries about police personnel training with United States Marines have resulted in a boilerplate response that glosses over civil liberties concerns and fails to acknowledge and address specific questions about those operations, a September 5 letter from USMC Public Affairs shows. The letter, signed by N. G. Fahy, Camp LeJeune Director, Public Affairs, states 'The decision to hire civilian police officers into the armed forces was made in order to free up our trained military policemen to deploy without having to sacrifice security at home.'" ... |

"It’s hard for those of us stranded in flyover country to fully grok the anti-gun, pro-disarmament POV popular among citizens inhabiting the left and right coasts. But putting ourselves in a gun control advocate’s shoes is a useful endeavor—if only to plot better ways to counter the antis’ arguments. In her piece for GQ—Guns ‘R Us—writer Jeanne Marie Laskas [above] reverses the process. She embarked on an anthropological expedition into the wilds of Yuma, Arizona to see what this great American 'gun love' is all about . . ." ... |

Daily News Editor Page Editor Sandra Shea reckons there are too many guns. And Daily News Editor Page Editor Sandra Shea has the evidence to prove it: 'On any given day, the room holds 7,000 to 10,000 guns – all confiscated in crimes commited [sic] in the city. The volume is shocking. In a room with this many guns ... there’s just one thing to think about: death. No, that’s not exactly right: The volume is so overwhelming that I’m not really thinking at all.' Roger that. But wait! There’s more! Sandra really gets into it . . ." ... |

"I tend to scan the press releases from the [ATF] where they crow about their latest exploit as the 'Violent Crime Bureau'. They usually involve felons in possession or drug dealers getting sent to prison with the occasional straw purchase thrown in for good measure. The press releases are officially from the US Attorney's Office for the relevant local judicial district."
"Today I happened to read one concerning a felon in possession. The headline for the release read 'Austin Felon Sentenced for Possessing Assault Rifle.' "Lots of shooters think striker fired pistols are 'new' and 'next generation' when in reality it’s an old technology. Some of the earliest semi-automatic handguns used strikers vs. the traditional hammer for cartridge ignition. Take the FN Browning 1900 as an example. The FN 1900 was the first commercially successful auto-loading pistol and it featured a striker firing system. It was sleek, snag free and was well-suited for the task of concealed carry . . ."

"You can’t really expect American Rifleman to tell its readers what caliber to carry in their self-defense gun. For one thing, American Rifleman is an NRA publication; the gun rights org gets big bucks from ammunition suppliers. For another, it’s a Miller Lite-type dilemma: great penetration or more expansion? Blowing a hole through the bad guy’s vitals or causing maximum tissue damage ('pain'). Field Editor Richard Mann continues the caliber wars by gelatin-testing some 100 rounds for velocity, penetration and expansion (excluding my chosen .45 carry Hornady Critical Defense). Mr. Mann provides all the raw data in a few charts that studiously avoid ranking the rounds. [Click here to view.] He sums up the 'result' this way . . ." ... |

"If you’ve been around guns for very long, there’s a good chance you’ve come across a Smith & Wesson M&P. The Smith & Wesson M&P is, in my opinion, one of the best polymer handguns on the market. Like all things in life, however, it has a weakness: the trigger.
Much has been written and said about the stock trigger on the M&P, so I won’t reiterate in detail here. Personally, I don’t think the stock trigger is completely horrible, but it’s certainly not above average, and it doesn’t fit into what is otherwise an exceptional handgun ..." ... |

As an all-purpose round it set out to do a little of everything, but never really succeeded at anything. Accuracy, stopping power and barrier penetration problem reports have been pouring in from all over."
"In 2010 the Army announced a replacement, the M855A1 "Brown Tip" Enhanced Performance Round (EPR), after delays to its development caused by poor ballistic performance when used in high-temperature environments. The round was also developed to be 'green' and lead-free. This immediately raised suspicions that the Army was giving in to health and environmental concerns at the cost of cartridge performance." ... |
