Surveillance video shows that a Mobile teenager who had been wanted for questioning in connection with a deadly shooting over the Fourth of July was acting in self-defense, according to his attorney.
Christine Hernandez told FOX10 News that she and her client, Curtis Ridge III, met with Mobile police detectives this week and that the investigators informed them they were aware self-defense was at issue.
Ridge has not been charged, but the Mobile Police Department and the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office said they can’t comment. They say the investigation remains ongoing. |

The veteran, whose name has not been released, was meeting a man to purchase equipment through an online transaction. The encounter quickly escalated into a life-threatening situation, leaving both men injured.
According to Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry, the veteran met the suspect, later identified as Abel Medardo Sacrab-Chen, in Cullman to complete the transaction. Sacrab-Chen informed the victim that the equipment was not on-site and suggested they drive to another location. Once inside the vehicle, Sacrab-Chen pulled a knife, pressed it to the veteran’s throat, and demanded money, threatening to kill him. |

The plan was released four weeks after the chilling conclusion to the Supreme Court’s recent term, which some legal scholars, analysts and even former federal judges described as brazen and corrupt. |

California and Hawaii can enforce bans on carrying guns in some public locations including bars and parks, a federal appeals court ruled today, partly reversing lower court orders blocking the bans.
A unanimous panel of the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that both states can enforce gun bans in bars and restaurants that serve alcohol and in parks, and that California can enforce bans in casinos, libraries, zoos, stadiums and museums. Those bans extend to adjacent parking lots. |

An attempted robbery at a BP station in Paddock Hills turned deadly when a store clerk fatally shot the alleged robber, Dana Bruenton. The incident occurred at the intersection of Reading Road and Tennessee Avenue just before 3 a.m. when Bruenton reportedly entered the store and demanded money.
According to initial reports, Bruenton became aggressive, forcing the store clerk into a tense standoff. After opening the cash register as ordered, the clerk refused to get on the ground, escalating the situation into a physical struggle. The store clerk, acting quickly in self-defense, reached for a firearm kept behind the counter and shot Bruenton. |

As a political writer and solid believer in the right to armed self-defense, I spend some time each day researching defensive shooting episodes throughout the country in order to keep my finger on the pulse of the matter. And as a resident of a Tulsa, Oklahoma, suburb, I also keep a pretty close eye on the local news on a daily basis.
So, when those two worlds meet—as they did recently—I can’t help but want to write about it.
On Tuesday evening, a Tulsa homeowner used his firearm to stop five men who were attacking him in his front yard. The incident is a good example of a firearm being the “great equalizer” since a 5-on-1 fight would not normally be winnable by the lone party. |

Despite upholding these bans, the appeals court also affirmed parts of lower court rulings that blocked some restrictions. It ruled that neither state could enforce bans on guns in banks or adjacent parking lots, and Hawaii could not enforce bans in shared parking lots between government and non-government buildings.
California was also prohibited from enforcing bans in hospitals, public transport, permitted gatherings, and places of worship. |

The new Montgomery ordinance drew immediate outrage from state GOP officials who had supported a 2023 law granting gun owners the right to carry a concealed gun without a permit. A spokesperson for Republican Attorney General Steve Marshall called the local measure illegal, but did not say whether Marshall planned to file a lawsuit.
According to the ordinance, Montgomery police can confiscate a concealed gun if the gun holder is not also carrying a photo ID. The firearm would remain in police custody until the gun holder pays a fine and provides proof of purchase to the local precinct within 30 days.

"Do you have a gun in your home?"
It’s not an easy question to ask, and some parents may have difficulty bringing up the topic before a sleepover or playdate, but it’s something every parent has a right to know — and the answer may save a child’s life.
Pennsylvania mom Kate Baer tells TODAY.com that gun violence is a topic she can't let go of. The best-selling author said the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School is never far from her mind, but it's something she rarely discusses. |

Just a couple of weeks ago, a special panel of Georgia state senators convened to study potential laws aimed at keeping firearms safely locked up and out of the hands of children.
A day after a 14-year-old was charged in a deadly shooting at his Georgia high school, that same panel gathered again Thursday to discuss safe gun storage policies. The lawmakers are still talking about the issue because — like many state legislatures across the U.S. — they have been unable to agree in recent years on whether new gun safety measures provide a solution to the all-too-frequent occurrence of mass shootings at schools and public places. |

“[A]s a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this, and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris,” Cheney declared to an audience that erupted in cheers and applause.
Considering Harris has been hostile to the Second Amendment throughout her political career and represents an existential threat if she should be elected, it’s impossible to view Cheney’s abandonment of gun owners as anything but a complete betrayal. |

The high court found that people have a constitutional right to carry weapons in public and that measures to restrict that right must be consistent with the nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation.
“I’m disappointed that the 9th Circuit did not look at our … challenge to rural parks and beaches,” which can be dangerous and require people to protect themselves, said Alan Beck, an attorney representing the Maui residents and the Hawaii Firearms Coalition. He plans to ask for a review by a fuller panel of judges, he said. |

Maine’s extreme risk protection order law was strengthened after an Army reservist killed 18 people at two locations in the city of Lewiston last October. Since the attacks, the law has been used 15 times more often than it was during the three previous years, Gov. Janet Mills said at a news conference.
“It is clear that, following last year’s tragedy, more and more law enforcement officers across the state are taking this law seriously, have taken state-provided training on its use, and are now using it on a daily basis to remove firearms from those who should not have them,” Mills said.

ATFA president Curtis Douglas said during the last six months, more than eight fishing boats and engines had been stolen from beaches in Plymouth, Belle Garden and other parts of the island.
He claimed the engines and boats were stolen under the watch of a new security company that was given the contract to man the fishing facilities. |

Imagine leaving a gun in an unlocked vehicle. Imagine that gun is stolen and ends up shooting a kid. Killing a kid.
It’s more than an exercise in imagining. It happens. It just did in Sioux Falls.
Unsecured guns are dangerous. Unsecured guns can kill.
That was my wife’s main message when she addressed the Rapid City Council at its Aug. 19 meeting, speaking on behalf of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America on the need to promote safe handling and secure storage of firearms.
Without safe gun handling and storage, terrible things can and do happen. |

It’s become a routine: Shots fired. Students and teachers take cover. Police arrive. Dazed students, hands raised, evacuate. Shooter neutralized. News conference held. Officers are praised for their response. Victims identified. Makeshift shrines erected. Politicians declare that now is not the moment to talk about guns, and instead raise “thoughts and prayers” for the victims and their families.
Meanwhile, the clock keeps ticking on youth violence. |
