*Bradford charged with felony perjury*

"Houston Police Chief C.O. Bradford was indicted Friday on allegations of lying under oath about whether he used foul language with subordinates. Hours later, Mayor Lee Brown suspended the first police chief in Houston in modern times to be charged with a crime."

"The allegation against Bradford stems from a rift between Bradford and suspended Capt. Mark Aguirre, the police supervisor in charge of last month's unrelated raid at a westside Kmart."

UK: "Gun seen" leads to cordoned street and three arrests - for BB gun

"A MAN has been detained by police after an armed siege in the city."

"Police were called to a top floor flat at North Junction Street, in Leith, in the afternoon yesterday after reports that a gun had been seen."

"Armed police took part in an operation to retrieve the weapon - later found to be a 'BB gun', which fires ball bearings."

"A Ferry Road resident, who asked not to be identified, said when he arrived home at 7.30pm, the whole street had been blocked off and at least three police vans were outside the house."

"One neighbour said police were still at the flat when he arrived home at about 10.30pm. 'I was told not to come home because there was a shooter here,' the man said."

Over a sighted BB gun and no reports of any misuse.

Another lousy history text

"The new school year is here and already I'm on the verge of outrage. And it all began the very first day of classes."

"My elder daughter, a junior at Mt. Lebanon High School, brought home her history textbook. It's the brand-spankin'- new, copyright 2002 'American Odyssey: The United States in the 20th Century' published by Glencoe McGraw-Hill."

"A lover of history, I like to peruse these books to see how the educratic establishment is dysfunctioning these days."

"One tell-tale litmus test for any history text in my book is how it treats the Second Amendment. Does it discuss the amendment for what it is — the individual right to bear arms? Or does it espouse the collectivist theory that liberals so love — that the Second Amendment guarantees only the right of state militias to be armed sans any federal strictures?" ...

KABA NOTE: The writer of this story is obviously a Second Amendment advocate. But he's wrong on one point.

He quotes another textbook used at a government indoctrination center a couple of years ago as having said "states can limit the sale and use of guns within their borders." He says that is correct -- and he's wrong.

If the states can violate the Second Amendment, they can violate the First, Fourth, Fifth, Ninth, Tenth, etc. -- and they cannot. They certainly exhibit the POWER to do it, but they do not have the Constitutional AUTHORITY to do it.

The Second Amendment, a "right of the people," was intended to be unalienable -- beyond the reach of anyone in government.

If you would like to address this point with the writer, Mr. Colin McNickle, you can email him at: cmcnickle@tribweb.com.

If you would like more information on that issue, consider reading Brian Puckett's article entitled: "The Founders Intended for the Bill of Rights to Apply to the States".

"Hamilton was Himself a Victim of Handgun Violence"

Blog, by Volokh, chiding Violence Policy Center for choosing Alex Hamilton as a gun-control poster boy

"Whatever one may say about Hamilton's death, it most assuredly provides zero support for gun control proposals. Blaming the gun -- as opposed to blaming Hamilton himself, blaming Burr, blaming social attitudes that tolerated or encouraged dueling, or whatever else -- in this case is almost self-parody."

Too expensive to arm pilots?

"An airline pilots' group that supports arming flight crews as a 'last line of defense' against potential terrorist hijackers says training cost figures cited by the government are seriously over-estimated."

The administration's start-up figure comes out to $800 to $900 million to train as many as 85,000 commercial air pilots who volunteer to be armed in cockpits.

This is, of course, in line with the $500 toilet seats the government is so proud of purchasing.

"If a terrorist wants to get into the United States, all he has to do is fly a small plane across the border from Canada, below the radar."

"Nobody will see him -- because nobody's watching."

"The job of military men and women of the North American Air Defense (Norad) is to watch and protect America's skies. Norad is plugged into radar pictures all over the continent, but it admits the view near the Canadian border is, at best, incomplete."

Arm the pilots

WASHINGTON TIMES: "As has been pointed out on this page and elsewhere, you won't get a response from 911 at 30,000 feet. In the event a would-be terrorist slips through security -- a distinct possibility, as recent breaches have made all too clear -- the only thing standing between another potential disaster and getting safely back on the ground is the ability of the flight crew to defend itself."

"Reinforced cockpit doors are great, but arming pilots is the best way to level the playing field. Without armed pilots, an armed thug stands a far greater chance of getting through security and using his weapon to seize control of the aircraft. Without comparable means of fighting back, the crew and all aboard are would be at the mercy of the hijacker. Given the reality that many pilots are former military personnel and have already had extensive screening and training, arming them is just common sense."

"The Philadelphia Daily News’ August 22 front-page story (mysteriously missing from its website) printed the photographs of 15 of the 41 people who have outstanding homicide warrants in the Philadelphia area. They were all visible minorities."

"Daily News editor Ellen Foley issued an apology:"
“The cover of our paper last Thursday carried mugshots of 15 of 41 suspects. They were African-American, Hispanic or Asian. .... There were no white people who were being sought for murder.”
"Seeing all those minority suspects produced an instant reaction in the multicultural community. They acted as if they’d been the victims of a blood libel."

When in fact, the story had told itself, in pictures -- and the "upset" communities whose members are being sought for murder weren't comfortable with the facts, so they tried to keep a newspaper from helping the community identify potential murderers.

That kind of political correctness can get people killed.

"Children as young as nine are flocking to join violent street gangs and taking part in crimes such as drug dealing, theft and even murder."

"Alarming figures suggest there are now as many as 30,000 gang members across England and Wales and the numbers are rising rapidly. The number of gang members aged under 16 has doubled in the past year and nearly half of all gang murders committed with firearms now involve victims under the age of 18."

"London, Birmingham and Manchester have the most extreme problems, closely followed by Liverpool, Leeds and Bradford, while other towns and cities are increasingly experiencing problems associated with gang culture."

"Steve Shropshire, an expert on gangs and youth culture and co-author of a new report that highlights the problem, said: 'Young people are being drawn into the gangs and crews in ever increasing numbers and the average age of new members is falling dramatically. The gang culture is now inextricably linked with gun violence."

"Many gangs are sophisticated and some have access to private doctors who will treat gunshot wounds without reporting the incident to the police."

"Increasingly, he reports, gang activity is centred around schools. A typical secondary school in a gang area will have up to 20 hardcore members among the pupils, 30 or 40 associate members and up to 100 or more who are marginally involved."

"The members listen to gangsta rap and idolise the heroes of films like Scarface, Goodfellas and Menace II Society, adopting their values and some of their language."

"Hundreds of Maoist rebels fighting to end Nepal's constitutional monarchy attacked a police station in a remote mountainous village yesterday, killing at least 49 police officers, a government minister said."

"There were about 70 police officers stationed at the post in the village of Bhiman, about 100 miles south-east of the capital, Kathmandu. About 20 were injured in the attack, and two others were reported missing, the deputy home minister Devendra Raj Kadel said after a visit to the site."

"The rebels attacked the police post at around 12.30am yesterday, and the gun battle continued for more than three hours, the minister said. Communications to the post were knocked out half an hour after the assault began."

"Although the post is only about 12 miles from the district headquarters, government reinforcements took several hours to reach the village because rebels blocked the roads, a police official said."

"Police top brass have admitted that their men and women in blue are not adequately trained."

"Seventy-two police officers have been killed since the beginning of the year. Now the South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating what influence their training - or lack thereof - has had on the high incidence of police killings."

"Most of those killed are from police stations and not specialised units. Their deaths could be the result of most police station members not being adequately trained despite attending to violent situations regularly, said Riaan van Staden, the head of the directorate of police safety."

"He said policemen were not allowed to carry a gun off-duty unless they had permission and then only under the strictest conditions."

"Despite a law that requires people under restraining orders to turn in any weapons, Richard Strich had two guns in his possession on Aug. 28."

"On that day, Strich allegedly shot his estranged wife and later, held a handgun to his head during a five-hour standoff with Milford police."

"Strich is charged with attempted murder for firing a shotgun at his estranged wife in a Devon home, wounding her in the shoulder."

"Milford police are still investigating exactly how he acquired the weapons."

"Strich was required to surrender all handguns after his wife, Sandra, was granted a court protective order against him because she feared for her safety."

"But the order wasn't enough to protect Sandra Strich."

"and a legal loophole may make it difficult for other domestic violence victims to feel secure."

"While police can arrest anyone who transfers a handgun to another person without registering the transfer with the state, there are no penalties for those who transfer shotguns."

"If this requirement was in place, it might have been noticed that someone was transferring a shotgun to Strich, and then authorities would have been notified, officials acknowledge." ...

Please use the "Post Comments" link above to respond:

The basic rules of gun safety clearly say not to point your firearm at anything you're not willing to destroy.

Is it right to call a negligent or unexpected discharge that leads to injury or death of an innocent person an "accident"?

Should someone who negligently discharges his or her firearm and kills an innocent person be charged with a crime and sent to jail?

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so. Indeed I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order. — Adolf Hitler, April 11, 1942. (Source: "Hitler's Table-Talk at the Fuehrer's Headquarters 1941-1942", Dr. Henry Picker, ed. (Athenaeum Verlag, Bonn, 1951).)
