Douglas MacKinnon, press secretary to former Sen. Bob Dole, is a former White House and Pentagon official:

"As a Republican, [I say letting the "assault weapons" ban sunset] could result in the loss of life of law enforcement officers, innocent civilians or even our troops overseas." ...

"Even weapons such as these assault weapons, which have absolutely no place in civilized society." ...

"I am strongly in favor of Americans having the right to bear arms. I support the Second Amendment. What I don't support, and in fact what I find disgusting, is any attempt to weaken or let expire the ban on these weapons of mass death and mass misery." ...

"Gun violence is a problem in our communities. Firearms are too easily accessible to criminals and unsupervised kids. That is why NEA members call on Congress to act now without further delay to pass responsible, common sense gun safety legislation that prevents guns from falling into the wrong hands."

"Ask your Senators to vote for S. 1034 to renew the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, which will expire in September 2004 if Congress does not take action. The Ban has been successful in decreasing the supply and availability of specified military-style, semi-automatic guns with multiple assault weapons features such as high ammunition capacity and rapid-fire capability (e.g., the Uzi and AK-47). These guns are not well suited for hunting or self-defense, but they are the weapons of choice for criminals."

There you have it folks! Instead of focusing on education, these nazis are publishing political propaganda, trying to politicize and enslave your children to the socialist nanny state.

They are the American people's liberty, teeth and keystone under independence ... from the hour the pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and the pistol are equally indispensable ... the very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference — they deserve a place of honor with all that is good.' "In the most aggressive -- and, some say, invasive -- step yet to protect air travelers, the federal government and the airlines will phase in a computer system next year to measure the risk posed by every passenger on every flight in the United States."

"The new Transportation Security Administration system seeks to probe deeper into each passenger's identity than is currently possible, comparing personal information against criminal records and intelligence information. Passengers will be assigned a color code -- green, yellow or red -- based in part on their city of departure, destination, traveling companions and date of ticket purchase."

They are that American power is a bad thing, whereas the UN is good, that the Palestinians are in the right and Israel isn't, that the war in Iraq was wrong, that the European Union is a good thing and that people who criticise it are 'xenophobic', ...that government should spend more on social programmes, that the Pope is out of touch except when he criticises the West, that gun control is the answer to gun crime, that... well, you can add hundreds more articles to the creed without my help."

Put Constitution on $1 bill — or just First Amendment?

"The First Amendment, more than any other part of the Constitution, defines what is unique about America. The late Supreme Court Justice William Brennan Jr. once told columnist Nat Hentoff that the First Amendment was his favorite part of the Constitution. 'All other liberties and rights flow from the freedom to speak up,' Brennan said." ...

"The only downside to this plan might be that after the First Amendment goes on the $1 bill, the National Rifle Association will want to slap the Second Amendment and its disputed right to 'keep and bear arms' language on the $2 bill. And will criminal defendants, organized crime and property rights activists want to 'take the Fifth' and put the Fifth Amendment on the $5 bill?"

Someone broke into the locked car between Aug. 25 and Aug. 27. The burglar also stole a set of police handcuffs, the gun case, several loaded magazines, a gun cleaning kit and the videotape from the recording system in the patrol car."

Should you be scared of the Patriot Act?

"The truth of the matter seems to be that while some portions of the Patriot Act are truly radical, others are benign. Parts of the act formalize and regulate government conduct that was unregulated—and potentially even more terrifying—before. Other parts clearly expand government powers and allow it to spy on ordinary citizens in new ways. But what is most frightening about the act is exacerbated by the lack of government candor in describing its implementation. FOIA requests have been half-answered, queries from the judiciary committee are blown off or classified. In the absence of any knowledge about how the act has been used, one isn't wrong to fear it in the abstract—to worry about its potential, since that is all we can know."

"In addition to limiting free speech, both legislative provisions will have the effect of significantly weakening the nation's political party system. This would perversely occur at the very moment that a national consensus calling for stronger parties has emerged following years of party-weakening trends. Moreover, as recent history has demonstrated, political parties, which have used much of their soft money to fund issue ads, are far more likely than political action committees to support viable challengers. Thus, a collateral effect accruing to those reformers who voted for the bill will be its incontrovertible incumbent-protection effects — at a time when re-election rates are already at historic highs." ...
