Police on Monday identified an officer involved in the fatal shooting of a 48-year-old man, who allegedly displayed a weapon that was later found to be a toy gun, El Paso Police Department officials said.
Gregory Smith died from gunshot wounds he suffered after Officer Matthew Jones fired several rounds in what police described as self-defense, said Officer Chris Mears, an El Paso Police Department spokesman.
Jones, an 11-year veteran with El Paso Police Department, stopped Smith in the parking lot of the Coronado Motel, 4645 N. Mesa, at about 8:50 a.m. Friday, Mears said. Jones believed Smith matched the description of an alleged fugitive with outstanding warrants, he said. |

TO REMEMBER |
| America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by one enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. — JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1821) |
