I genuinely want to be done with defending the Second Amendment from the regular barrage of its historically illiterate and inept detractors—the people who say this amendment protects only the “right” of the “militia” to own weapons.
One friend and fellow gun rights activist said it’s best to just ignore such people, in the same way that you might ignore people who say triangles have four sides or that the Sun orbits the Earth. It is tempting to just stop engaging the dopes who simply refuse to consider basic, objective historical facts. |

There is a glaring omission from this article.
The author sets about debunking a ridiculous parsing of the Second Amendment, but his effort would be completely unnecessary if he made this one point:
The Second Amendment, as submitted to the states, ratified by the states, verified and posted by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, HAD ONLY ONE COMMA.
IOW, the superfluous 1st and 3rd commas generate the mischief the author arduously labors to dismantle, and if he merely stressed the "one comma" fact, such mischief would become moot.
Nobody knows who inserted those two commas, but the purpose for doing so is apparent - to equate "A well-regulated militia" with the "right of the people".
We need to address this, once and for all. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"Some people think that the Second Amendment is an outdated relic of an earlier time. Doubtless some also think that constitutional protections of other rights are outdated relics of earlier times. We The People own those rights regardless, unless and until We The People repeal them. For those who believe it to be outdated, the Second Amendment provides a good test of whether their allegiance is really to the Constitution of the United States, or only to their preferences in public policies and audiences. The Constitution is law, not vague aspirations, and we are obligated to protect, defend, and apply it. If the Second Amendment were truly an outdated relic, the Constitution provides a method for repeal. The Constitution does not furnish the federal courts with an eraser." --9th Circuit Court Judge Andrew Kleinfeld, dissenting opinion in which the court refused to rehear the case while citing deeply flawed anti-Second Amendment nonsense (Nordyke v. King; opinion filed April 5, 2004) |
