But the AP concludes, “Those measures … would have had no impact in keeping weapons from the hands of suspects in several of the deadliest recent mass shootings that have spurred calls for tighter gun control.”
That’s true enough, but the AP’s shorthand — and Obama’s — conveys a false version of reality: First, people selling guns at gun shows are almost exclusively licensed dealers, and the few who aren’t typically run their buyers though one of the dealers anyway. Indeed, many gun show organizers require it.
Second, online sales are already illegal unless the gun is shipped to a licensed dealer, who conducts a background check for a fee. |

Typical Obama setting up a straw man and then solving the false problem by fiat. Has anyone ever heard of a person going to a gun show and buying a van load of guns and then selling them in Chicago. Both of those would be already a Federal Felony. Adding another law that is not enforced makes no sense. Did he talk about the illegal use of weapons by feral kids in Democratically controlled cities. Did he ask to put them in prison? Anderson Cooper even said it. Only 1% of criminals get their weapons at gun shows. Thus he is attacking what is now a legal gun sale by private citizen's . Yes, he does want to take our guns away. He is in favor of so called assault weapons ban. That is taking guns away. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
I do believe that where there is a choice only between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence. Thus when my eldest son asked me what he should have done had he been present when I was almost fatally assaulted in 1908 [by an Indian extremist opposed to Gandhi's agreement with Smuts], whether he should have run away and seen me killed or whether he should have used his physical force which he could and wanted to use, and defend me, I told him it was his duty to defend me even by using violence. Hence it was that I took part in the Boer War, the so-called Zulu Rebellion and [World War I]. Hence also do I advocate training in arms for those who believe in the method of violence. I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honor than that she should in a cowardly manner become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonor. — Mohandas K. Gandhi, Young India, August 11, 1920 from Fischer, Louis ed.,The Essential Gandhi, 1962 |
