"The [C]ourt has to date ruled only that the Second Amendment protects having a handgun in the home for self-defense."
Patently false. The Court ruled that the people have a right unconnected to militia service to keep and bear arms for traditionally lawful purposes, SUCH AS self-defense within the home.
Although the Heller case was specifically about possession in the home, the actual grammar of the holding mentions the home almost as an afterthought.
Yet, this is the meme, repeated ad nauseum. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction. — St. George Tucker, in his edition of 'Blackstone's Commentaries,' 1:300 (1803). |
