It has been two years since a gunman opened fire on a crowd of concert-goers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, killing 58 people. In part, the incident led to gun legislation during the 2019 legislative session. SB143 was one of the first bills Governor Steve Sisolak signed into law. It will require background checks on all gun sales starting in January, including private party sales. "Background checks do save lives," Will Pregman, Communications Director for Battle Born Progress said. "There are many background checks that get rejected just from the current system when people trying to buy a gun and have committed violent crimes."

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of. Notwithstanding the military establishments in the several kingdoms of Europe, which are carried as far as the public resources will bear, the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms. — James Madison, The Federalist Papers, No. 46 |
