"A proposed ammunition ban from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has local gun enthusiasts upset, saying the ban is a violation of their second amendment rights. The ATF wants to ban 5.56 mm ammunition used is AR-15 rifles and handguns."

"The ATF says this ammunition has the power to pierce through a police officer's bulletproof vest. Despite its danger to law enforcement, it's also a popular ammunition among sportsmen and hunters."

"'It doesn't really matter what it is right now, if it's 5.56 mm, it's selling quickly,' Liberty Arms Manager Colton May said."

"Word travels fast, and in the gun business the latest talk is the ATF's proposed ban on ammo for AR-15's." ...

I suspect ATF has one aspect of its issued edict's rationalization correct. M855 bullets do "kill" a mountain of inanimate objects, a small forest of paper targets, legions of clay birds and assorted houseware, and "ding" countless thousands of metal plate targets. Activities which give lied to this administration's contention of "no sporting purpose". Particularly when one discerns the vast majority of american shooting takes place in venues far removed from the game fields.

But there is an objective to this proposed ban. The 5.56mm round and the AR platforms are the most adaptable and comfortable platforms for shooters of all ages and sizes. Moreover its a "gun for all seasons", readily converted to suit the users purpose.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands? — Patrick Henry, 3 J. Elliot, Debates in the Several State Conventions 45, 2d ed. Philadelphia, 1836
