Passion among supporters and opponents of a bill to legalize silencers ran high on Thursday during a hearing by the Minnesota House Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy and Finance Committee.
Gun rights advocates sported buttons that read, "Self defense is a human right," and opponents wore large stickers that said "gun injuries and deaths are preventable." So why is this such a hot topic? Read on for a closer look at the bill and the issue. |

Alas proponents of "silencers" - regardless of the physical realities, the history, or the documented benefits of these devices - are facing a hysterical majority whose "scientific data base" includes a lot of hollywood movie sound tracks, mendacious anti-gun activists, and "zero" personal experience. |

Just the title, "silencers" is misleading. More accurate to say "suppressors" since they only take the edge off the explosive sound. It's better for hearing and noise pollution in general. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd. — Alexis de Tocqueville |
