The murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida, was a lethal example of the racist and mortally flawed "stand your ground" laws.
If you recall, a "stand your ground" law allows individuals to shoot and, in some cases, even kill other people based on the claim that the shooter "perceived" that their life was being threatened. Technically, the lawyers for Zimmerman (who has since his shooting of Trayvon Martin been involved in several acts of violence and repeatedly tweeted racist comments) argued his case on the basis of what might be called standard self-defense law.

At least we can credit Mark Karlin with some degree of veracity as "Truthout" - with "out" being the operative word - pretty accurately describes the content of his diatribe. The "facts" established at trial revealed Mr. Zimmerman wasn't "white" as claimed. he was physically assaulted by an attacker his physical superior who proceeded to "mount" his prostrate body and rain blows on his head and face and slamming his head into a cement sidewalk. In self-defense he shot his assailant from a supine position at close range. His assailant was a known abuser of the street drug "lean" as well as marijuana. Zimmerman's assailant was also engaged in various criminal activities.
"truth "OUT" , indeed ! |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our Founding Fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the second amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of the country. For that reason I believe the second amendment will always be important. --JOHN F. KENNEDY |
