ME: Looser firearms laws won’t make us safer

But the National Rifle Association’s relentless lobbying for looser gun laws has a side effect. Its attempt to normalize guns as a part of daily life in America has led to a casual attitude resulting in an astonishing number of deaths and injuries because of improper handling or storage of guns, or because of just plain foolishness on the part of gun owners. These are not crimes, but accidents. Accidental discharges in public places: stores, hotel rooms, restrooms, even gun shows. People showing off “toys” and accidentally shooting themselves or a friend. Children finding guns at home with tragic results.

Hard to find any consumer product more stringently tested, so carefully manufactured, more functionally reliable and controlled than a firearm, Ms. Fahey. But alas, no device is "foolproof". Lots of our "toys" can - and do - injure users, bystanders and the innocent on a daily basis. But theres no "documented evidence" supporting your contention of increased firearm population leads to increased accidents. Quite the opposite, per USG statistics.

There will always be the careless, the negligent and the ignorant contriving ways to harm themselves and others with just about everything associate with our technological society. In our daily lives, I suspect firearms are the most remote threat we face.

Deborah -

Do you want to be 'safe', or do you want to be FREE?

Simple question.
