The City Council in Spokane, Washington, has passed an ordinance prohibiting police from selling confiscated firearms, citing an Associated Press investigation that found that some guns sold by law enforcement were used in new crimes. “Disposing of long guns and assault rifles is a sensible approach,” Councilwoman Candace Mumm told The Associated Press in an email after the 6-1 vote on Monday night. “Instead of spending time recycling weapons, our police staff can get back to the primary mission of solving crimes and protecting the public.” |

They're still going to have to "...secure, catalog, process, transport and document the weapons."
The "... more than a dozen..." (thirteen?) firearms out of 6,000 over an eight year period were used in crimes, including suicide (still illegal), equate to the HUGE 0.22 percent of the sales.
So, the city is going to give up revenue for a symbolic gesture that will accomplish absolutely NOTHING, because those bent on criminal acts, including suicide, will find a way.
By the way, 99.78% of the weapons sold over that near-decade period were sold to law-abiding citizens who haven't used them for nefarious purposes. |
