UK: Why not require suitability test before gun purchase?

Last month, Stephen Paddock committed the largest single massacre, but not the last mass killing in the United States’ recent history. Using a repeater rifle he fired many rounds of ammunition into a crowd of concert-goers for approximately 10 minutes. The death toll was 59 people, including his own suicide, and he injured 527.

As usual, U.S. citizens are at a loss to explain the motives of murderers or to know how to defend themselves from such recurring massacres.

It would be clear to Americans that selling guns to children would be an unethical practice. Rational people agree children would not be able to judge how deadly guns can be. They do not have sufficient maturity to use guns safely.

Annie Oakley shot her first meal at age five after the death of her father. By age 8 she sold enough game to pay off the family mortgage. She was able to make the discernment but obviously the author of this piece is incapable of rational thought. You Brits used to love her. Some kids are ready at five and others are never ready.

Because any test for suitability or otherwise would not have stopped this murderer from buying guns. He passed a background test.

Just another stupid idea from a flaming liberal with no concept of the situation.

To add to jac's comment, any type of "test" will never catch everyone who somehow has gone askew psychologically.
bureaucracy is inefficient and messy. Too many employees do not follow through, or know how to do their job efficiently. Things get misfiled. Computers with records crash. And many psychos are quit adept at appearing normal.
It's not going to happen.

Non-starter.

In the United States of America, qualification tests cannot be imposed upon the exercise of a fundamental right.

Just. That. Simple.

I'm a United States citizen. So I'm suitable ! Guess UK stands for Unsuitable Kingdom and you can keep it.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of. Notwithstanding the military establishments in the several kingdoms of Europe, which are carried as far as the public resources will bear, the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms. — James Madison, The Federalist Papers, No. 46
