Bolt-action rifles are the standard for accuracy, but the lever-action rifle emblemizes American deer hunting. Lever guns are synonymous with the .30-30 cartridge, but standard pistol cartridges are, within limits, equally effective for deer hunting in lever guns, too. In fact, lever guns chambered for pistol cartridges might be even better choices than the .30-30 for deer hunters who typically shoot 75 yards or less, especially if you are sensitive to recoil.

If you can't handle the recoil of a 30-30, you should probably not be hunting. |

What if you can handle both? I own a .30 - 30 Winchester and a Browning 1892 in .44 magnum. Both work very well on deer....the .30 caliber just having a little longer legs. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms. — Tench Coxe in `Remarks on the First Part of the Amendments to the Federal Constitution' under the Pseudonym "A Pennsylvanian" in the Philadelphia Federal Gazette, June 18, 1789 at 2 col. 1. |
