Hastings and Hernandez were two of the women who spoke in favor of legislation that would ban anyone convicted of domestic assault and anyone subject to a restraining order from possessing or buying a gun for the duration. The women were part of a rally at the State House on Tuesday led by Rhode Island Moms Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety.

Also speaking in favor of the legislation Tuesday was Anthony Silva, a former Cumberland police chief and the current chief of staff to Lieutenant Governor Daniel McKee. Silva said the legislation has both McKee's endorsement and his own personal endorsement stemming from more than 30 years of police experience.
