Bob Hines, a retired well driller in central Minnesota, has bought many guns in his lifetime. He supports the Second Amendment and voted straight Republican in recent elections. But he’s also tired of hearing stories of mass shootings on the news. And while he’s not sure anything can be done to curb the violence at this point, doing something seems better than just waiting for the next massacre. |

“I wouldn’t have a problem with that,” [Bob] Hines said. “If you’re going to be a gun owner, you should be responsible. And if you’re a criminal, you’re not responsible.” Hines doesn’t understand why lawmakers aren’t willing to give ideas like expanding background checks a try.
Mr. Hines is parroting the popular meme and not thinking through what he is saying, to wit, responsible people will obey the background check law, and criminals will not.
So, then... what exactly would be the point of passing yet another burdensome law that only responsible people will obey?
His 'reasoning' is a non sequitur. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero (42B.C) |
