The mere presence of a gun in a home significantly increases all household members’ risk of a gun-related death due to suicide, homicide, or an accidental shooting. The purported benefits of defensive gun use do not offset the magnitude of this risk. A comprehensive analysis of 626 shootings occurring in three major U.S. cities found that for every time a gun was legally used to kill or injure for self-defense in the home, guns were also used for 11 attempted or completed suicides, seven homicides or criminal assaults, and four accidental shootings. |

In the vast majority of defensive gun cases the presence of an armed victim causes the criminal to break off their attack. This latest counter intuitive reasoning by the anti gun folks claims a defensive firearm use doesn't count unless the attacker is killed or wounded. Studies by several government agencies including the FBI and CDC have found that firearms are used to defend citizens somewhere between 500,000 and three million times a year. The lower number is those that generate a police report while the higher is an estimate of actual events. |

99% of defense uses of guns involve no shots fired, and there are a MINIMUM of 500,000 of these a year.
Liars use statistics but ignore the whole truth.

"The purported benefits of defensive gun use do not offset the magnitude of this risk."
Actually, the benefits aren't 'purported', they're real. A more rational statement would be "The purported benefits of going gun-free do not surmount the need for a gun when one's life is threatened." |

In other news, wearing a parachute has been found to increase your risk of dying when skydiving. There are a certain number of fatalities each year in skydiving, and shockingly, every one of the victims was found to have been wearing a parachute!
So, if you are about to jump from a plane, make sure you are not wearing a parachute. They are killers! |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
No kingdom can be secured otherwise than by arming the people. The possession of arms is the distinction between a freeman and a slave. He, who has nothing, and who himself belongs to another, must be defended by him, whose property he is, and needs no arms. But he, who thinks he is his own master, and has what he can call his own, ought to have arms to defend himself, and what he possesses; else he lives precariously, and at discretion. — James Burgh, Political Disquisitions: Or, an Enquiry into Public Errors, Defects, and Abuses [London, 1774-1775]. |
