Newly-elected New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has banned bear hunting on state-owned public lands via executive order. The only thing stopping Gov. Murphy from enacting a statewide ban on bear hunting, something the Governor was very vocal about during his campaign last year, is the balance of power between the governor and the state game agency. Because of statutory authority to regulate hunting seasons held by the New Jersey Fish and Game Council (NJFGC), the governor cannot ban a hunting season established by the NJFGC. He can, however, ban bear hunting on all state-owned public lands. Bear hunting is still permitted on private, county and municipal lands. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our Founding Fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the second amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of the country. For that reason I believe the second amendment will always be important. --JOHN F. KENNEDY |
