One again we are slapped in the face with the reality of statistics. Last week in Warner Robins a 4-year-old boy found a gun, we don’t know exactly where, but it was somewhere inside the car where he and three other children were riding. We don’t know if it was in the glove compartment or the handbag of the woman who had left the children unattended in the car while she went into a restaurant to pick up food.

Pretty good oped, with two faux pas:
1) The vast majority of 'children' victims counted by the CDC are between 14 and 19 - hardly 'children', and most are involved in gang culture.
2) The perpetual comparison of licensing drivers to licensing gun ownership. These people flatly ignore the fact that if we are to obey the Constitution, a license cannot be required to exercise a fundamental right.
"The enshrinement of constitutional rights necessarily takes certain policy choices off the table." - Antonin Scalia, D.C. v. Heller (2008)

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"Let us contemplate our forefathers, and posterity, and resolve to maintain the rights bequeathed to us from the former, for the sake of the latter. The necessity of the times, more than ever, calls for our utmost circumspection, deliberation, fortitude, and perseverance. Let us remember that `if we suffer tamely a lawless attack upon our liberty, we encourage it, and involve others in our doom.' It is a very serious consideration...that millions yet unborn may be the miserable sharers of the event." --Samuel Adams, speech in Boston, 1771 |
