In a famous letter to Wilson Cary Nicholas, penned in September 1803, President Thomas Jefferson made the case for a faithful reading of the U.S. Constitution. It is possible, Jefferson acknowledged, for a person to read the same set of words and to draw competing conclusions as to their meaning.
