While one or two firearm makers have historically offered a 1911 chambered in the 9 mm cartridge, it now seems that almost all major and many custom 1911 builders have some type of 9 mm pistol in the lineup. One such manufacturer is Sturm, Ruger & Co. Ruger recently added a 9 mm Luger “Commander” to its ever-expanding catalog of 1911 pistols.

Larry Pratt, the executive director emeritus of Gun Owners of America, insisted over the weekend that the founding fathers would have wanted every military-age man in the U.S. to carry an M-16 rifle “at a minimum.” Pratt invited Don Brockett, the author of a book called “The Tyrannical Rule of the U.S. Supreme Court,” to his “Gun Owners News Hour” program on Saturday. Brocket argued that the Second Amendment exists to allow states to defend themselves against invasion, which he said could mean that people should be allowed to have “equal weaponry” to an “invading army,” such as rocket-propelled grenades.

At the end of the day, you hunt sandhill cranes the same way you hunt just about any waterfowl. That’s no reason to slack off, though. Consider adding some of the following gear to your collection before you tackle this prehistoric-looking bird. A few years back, Franchi introduced the Affinity, an inertia-operated, semi-automatic lightweight shotgun chambered for 2¾- and 3-inch shells. With a look and feel not at all unlike the semi-auto scatterguns produced by Franchi’s parent company, Benelli—hence the inertia action—the Affinity was warmly received by wingshooters. |

In a speech in Philadelphia Thursday, Libertarian Party vice presidential candidate Bill Weld displayed a shift from his previous stances about the right to bear arms. After a few questions about the Veterans Administration—Weld favors privatizing it on the Medicare model—one college-age supporter at the Temple University event asked how, if the Constitution guarantees the right to life, can it also countenance the right to bear arms as broadly as it does in twenty-first-century America? |

On NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday, John Burnett hyped the objections of a few residents of Gonzales, Texas to gun rights backers' use of the town's slogan from the Texas Revolution. Burnett played up how "some Gonzalians are taken aback to see that Second Amendment activists have appropriated 'Come and Take It,' and substituted an assault rifle for their hallowed cannon." However, he failed to explain that the slogan has its roots in the reply of a king from ancient Greece, who rebuked an enemy's demand to disarm. |

Next week, I'll hit the vast woods of the Upper Peninsula for my annual bird hunting trip.
My hunting mates and I will walk the English setters through the golden, autumn forests waiting for the dogs to go on point. We can only hope for some birdy action.
The fall hunt is a tradition not just for me and my family, but for tens of thousands of families across Michigan. It's the time of year we flock to the north woods to get back to our more primitive natures.
It's also a good time with friends. Like most hunting camps, we cuss and swear, drink too much and eat too much. We revel in the one week a year when we can be slobs, escape work, childcare and housework. |

Back in June, Hillary Clinton appeared on ABC and, in an interview with George Stephanopoulos, outlined her plan for "common-sense gun safety measures." She vowed, among other things, to close gun-show loopholes, repeal the law that gives firearm companies immunity from lawsuits, and impose comprehensive background checks on anyone who wants to buy a weapon. All of that is standard liberal gun-control stuff, yet conservatives predictably responded that a Clinton presidency would spell an end to the Second Amendment. |
