... "'The head of Bloomberg's organization says that the billionaire New York mayor is installing paid staff in more than a dozen states expected to take up gun control legislation next year to complement a robust Washington lobbying operation and television ads,' the AP report explains."

"This is unprecedented and serious. While Bloomberg’s influence has been well documented in states like Colorado and Virginia, his establishment of the infrastructure needed to wage simultaneous state-level campaigns has been all but ignored, except by a very few." ...

"With tomorrow marking the passage of one year since the horrific atrocity of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre, the forcible citizen disarmament zealots can barely contain their rage at their agenda's lackluster performance over the past year, after their gleeful excitement at the lake of blood of the innocent they expected to successfully exploit. U.S. Senate embarrassment Chris Murphy (D-CT) says Congress should be 'embarrassed' at not yet having succeeded in entirely crushing private gun ownership in the U.S." ...

"Saturday's marking of the passage of one year since the atrocity of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre predictably brought with it a furious barrage of forcible citizen disarmament zealots hoping (again) to exploit the victims, in furtherance of the gun ban agenda. While all of these efforts are obviously morally reprehensible, some, in addition to being contemptible, are very odd, as well." ...

... "Teaching their children to shoot and respect guns came naturally to Anesi and Herman, who were taught to shoot as kids."

"It’s like teaching them anything else about safety, Herman said: You teach children not to touch a stove because it’s hot; you teach them to wear a seatbelt in the car; and you teach them about guns because they can be deadly if mishandled." ...

"Winchester White Box is so . . . white. Bland. Non-descript. While millions of gun owners consider minimalist WWB the sina qua non of range ammo, the ammunition company reckons new shooters need a little spizzarkle. Especially new female shooters, for whom a bit of low-recoil bling is just the thing. Not to mention range and defense ammo that matches. ... And so Winchester’s developed their W Train & Defend 9mm ammunition. "In the majority of these incidents, the shooters have obtained the weapons that they used legally, under America’s relatively liberal gun laws. Local officials have promised to enact safety legislation on the issue, restricting access to dangerous firefighting "tools". Pressurized extinguishers, fire axes, and "dihydrogen monoxide" are on the list of potentially banned items.

I’m writing this on Friday, December 13, 2013. I feel a sense of foreboding that has nothing to do with Friday the thirteenth. It has everything to do with the fact that tomorrow will mark one year since the atrocity in Newtown ... that left twenty little kids and six innocent adults dead before the monster responsible blew his own brains out."

"My first thought, and still the strongest, was the horror of it all: I have grandchildren the age of the victims. But I cannot escape the firestorm of hate that came down on law-abiding gun owners in the wake of it. Sandy Hook became a handy hook for a newly re-elected anti-gun President to take off his mask of neutrality on Second Amendment rights, and lead an unprecedented assault against them." ...

"Many statistics are well documented: There have been more than 10,000 gun-related deaths in the year since [redacted] slaughtered 20 children and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School."

"Since the Newtown massacre, Congress has approved zero measures to curb gun violence." ...

"The most basic gun control measure – requiring background checks for all gun purchasers, including people with histories of mental illness – stalled in Congress, despite having significant support among voters." ...

Submitter's Note: Perhaps because, according to Mother Jones' data 21 of the last 25 shooters obtained their weapons legally. Of the 4 who did not, one murdered his mother and took her weapons, and the other three stole their weapons.

According to a USA TODAY database, 30 mass killings since Newtown have claimed at least four victims; all but six of those tragedies involved firearms."

"Andrew Rothman, a long-time civil rights advocate, has been named the new president of the Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance, the group announced November 30 2013 in Maple Grove, Minn."

"Rothman, who has served as GOCRA’s vice president since January of 2011, and who founded the nonprofit Minnesota Association of Defensive Firearm Instructors in 2005, replaces outgoing president Joseph E. Olson, a professor at Hamline University School of Law, who founded GOCRA in 1989 after years of service as an individual activist." ...

"Had Louisiana voters been asked last year whether guns should be dished out to criminals, the likely response would have been, 'Are you nuts?'"

"The constitutional amendment they passed was supposed, as any expansion of Second Amendment rights always is, to make it easier for upstanding citizens to protect their lives and property. Whether it actually put them at further hazard, in a state where the risk of getting shot is already plenty high, is a question that remains up in the air. The state Supreme Court declined this week to decide whether the amendment invalidates a state law that disarms felons for 10 years after completion of their sentences." ...

"Lost in the debate concerning the Second Amendment, gun rights and the mass shootings that have become almost commonplace in the United States is the concept of the owners of weapons to use common sense in storing and securing firearms."

"Gun safes and trigger guards should be the norm, especially in a household where children are present or might be visiting."

"Such precautions would guard against playing with guns resulting in a tragedy as well as keeping weapons out of the hands of troubled individuals." ...

"Today, December 15, 2013, we celebrate the 222nd anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights was established as a check on government. Sadly, however, the Second* of these first Ten Amendments to the Constitution has been treated by government as the Red Headed Step Child**."

"Nationally, Democratic and Rino Republicans have historically passed every gun ban they thought they could get away with." ...

"Emily Miller's political views always have been conservative, but Second Amendment issues really weren't on her radar until it became personal."

"That happened four years ago when Miller, a senior opinion editor for the Washington Times, was housesitting for a friend when she became the victim of a crime."

"She was returning home after taking the dog for a walk when she encountered a stranger walking out of the front door with the cash and credit cards from her purse. After that, she decided to buy a gun for self-defense."

"'It took me four months and 17 steps to buy a gun I can't take out of my home,' Miller said. 'It was outrageous. It absolutely changed my view of everything I thought about the Second Amendment.'" ...

"Illinois' requirement that anyone owning or buying a firearm be licensed by the state is meant to ensure guns stay out of the hands of dangerous criminals and those with significant mental health issues."

"But critics argue it's an unnecessary hindrance to a person's constitutional right to own firearms and drives Illinois gun buyers to neighboring states with less restrictive laws."

"Illinois is one of only three states with such a stringent licensing requirement, and the application process includes an array of criminal and mental health checks. It does not require gun safety training." ...

"The anti-gun group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America held rallies yesterday in 50 cities across 36 states. Their Jessie Jackson-esque message on the anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting: 'No more silence. End gun violence.' Unfortunately, their rally in front of City Hall in Austin, Texas was less than spectacular. Maybe it was the cold, windy weather. Maybe it was poorly-promoted. Or maybe there just aren’t that many people who agree with MDA’s message of civilian disarmament. Whatever the reason, the turnout was small. Minuscule, even. All of twelve to fifteen people were there (mostly white, middle-aged, upper-middle class women) — and nearly as many reporters . . ." ...
