Surveillance video, obtained exclusively by the Herald-Tribune shortly after the shooting, supported Gunter's claims that he was only acting in self defense when he shot Roger Atlas in the lower abdomen, inflicting a minor wound.
Gunter, who invoked his Fifth Amendment rights at the scene, was arrested by Sarasota County sheriff's deputies on a charge of aggravated battery with a firearm, a felony punishable by a minimum of 25 years in prison under Florida's 10-20-Life law. |

A package of four bills introduced in the state House last week would allow legal gun owners to carry a concealed pistol without a permit.
Rep. Triston Cole, R-Mancelona, co-sponsored the package – House bills (HB) 5301 through 5304 — along with several other Republicans. He said the bill aims to give more freedom to legal gun owners who can openly carry firearms in public under current law and align Michigan with six other states that allow concealed carry without a permit.
“We’re not necessarily breaking new ground,” Cole said Feb. 4 from Lansing where the proposal was introduced two days prior. “Folks are surprised when they hear Vermont, which isn’t seen as a super conservative state, has this as an option.” |

As we learned from Harvey’s case, however, some publicly subsidized apartments have rules against tenants possessing firearms. While some may see this as well-intentioned and no different from rules about pets, smoking, and noise, it is very different because it affects constitutional rights.
Consider this: people live in public housing because they don’t have other options for a home. It is potentially their last resort for housing. Landlords however have a choice, in this case, – whether or not to accept taxpayer money or to operate solely as a private landlord. |

The above headline doesn’t quite sum up the reason Dan Muroff is running for Congress. But it comes close.
Muroff, 48, was the first to throw his hat into this now-crowded Democratic primary. (Mark your calanders: election day is coming up fast.) He's looking to unseat veteran U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah — who faces a string of federal corruption charges and a dwindling campaign coffer — and gun violence prevention is his big campaign issue.
A well-known attorney and Democratic ward leader in Mount Airy, Muroff has a long history of advocating for smarter gun control. |

While Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ win over former front-runner Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire on Tuesday piqued the interest of many, it makes not a whit of difference to America’s law-abiding gun owners.
Sure, it was surprising that the 74-year-old socialist beat Clinton by such a large margin (60 percent to 38 percent). But the fact that both are solid enemies of the Second Amendment means the only interest gun owners should have in the Democratic primaries is to make sure whichever one gets the nomination is soundly beaten in the general election by a candidate who respects our right to keep and bear arms. |

Senate Judiciary Chairman Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, now in the crosshairs of Second Amendment advocates, wants assurances a controversial open-carry gun bill won't become a vehicle for "bad things" if he brings the issue before his committee.
The proposal, already approved by the House, would allow people with concealed-weapons licenses to openly carry firearms.
Diaz de la Portilla, noting that the open-carry measure (SB 300) is "hanging by a thread," expressed concerns on multiple occasions this week about an amendment that was added to the House-approved version (HB 163). The amendment would allow lawmakers with concealed-weapons licenses to bring their guns into legislative meetings. |

... Forefront has been advocating House Bill 2793, which aspires to reduce suicides by restricting access to lethal means. Forefront and Washington state legislators introduced this bill at the third annual Suicide Prevention Education Day in Olympia, Wash., last Monday.
The bill, if passed, would create a “Safe Homes Task Force” by working with gun retailers and pharmacists to raise awareness about the issue and how to protect the vulnerable. For example, the bill would provide a tax credit for gun retailers who completed an online training course. The Nation Rifle Association (NRA) and the Second Amendment Foundation, a Washington gun rights group, recently backed the bill, with the NRA calling it “common sense.” |

Shea has said he will amend the legislation to remove the inaccurate quotes. Meanwhile, the comical kerfuffle has distracted from a spurious and unnecessary bill that detracts from serious debate about gun control. The Supreme Court ruling in Heller, after all, said that bearing arms is a right but, like the First Amendment, is not unlimited. Shea’s bill — and others introduced in this year’s Legislature — would work to undermine Initiative 594, a background-check law that was passed by 59.3 percent of voters in 2014. |

The Connecticut Citizens Defense League along with fellow plaintiffs have filed an appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States (Shew v Malloy). The appeal challenges part of Public Act 13-3 (An Act Concerning Gun Violence Prevention and Children’s Safety) that was enacted by the Connecticut Legislature back in 2013.
The plaintiffs are challenging the ban on certain firearms that look similar to assault rifles. The plaintiffs claim that these are common semi-automatic firearms that only shoot once when the trigger is pulled; identical to others not banned. Real “assault rifles” are full-automatic and can fire multiple times when the trigger is pulled. |

The Kansas Senate rejected two proposals to change the date when public universities would be required to allow concealed firearms onto campus.
Under current law universities must allow concealed firearms beginning in July 2017.
The first amendment would have allowed universities to keep concealed firearms off campus until July 2021. The second amendment would have moved the implementation date up to July 2016.
Both measures failed. |

However, as a last resort, an individual or group should not hesitate to bring the shooter down. Because many workplaces have been established as “gun-free zones,” potential victims must utilize items that could act as potential weapons – hindering a shooter’s ability to see, breathe, or control his weapon.
For those who carry firearms, the best piece of advice is simply to “practice,” Atwood said. Because of the amount of adrenaline involved, the odds of hitting your target decrease dramatically, according to Atwood, who encouraged gun owners to spend as much time at the shooting range as possible. |

The Idaho Second Amendment Alliance on Monday (Feb. 8th 2016) turned in another pro-gun bill designed to strengthen Idaho’s Firearms Preemption statute. It was turned into the House and submitted to the House State Affairs Committee where gun bills are usually routed.
The bill is designed to help protect Idaho’s gun owners from municipalities and state agencies who are seeking to undermine your 2nd Amendment rights. There should be no opposition to such a simple piece of legislation. Who would possibly oppose this other than anti-gun groups or individuals?

It is no surprise that the libertarian, gun-toting lawmaker showed up at the doorstep of this fight. She crafted a national image for herself in interviews during the original Cliven Bundy standoff in 2014, referring to the Bureau of Land Management staffers as “Nazi-minded” bullies, an off-the-cuff remark that is indicative of her self-proclaimed political incorrectness. Fiore is a kind of perfectly crafted Republican fever dream, a politically nuanced figure with blond, Real Housewives highlights and a persona that would fit in just as well on a reality television show or on the bully pulpit of a Trump-like nationally televised rally. |

A Bardstown business received an unpleasant surprise on Thursday when they say Facebook shut their page down due to “violations of the Facebook policy.”
“I was baffled,” said Kentucky Gun Company’s marketing manager, Christian Swarts.
What owner Patrick Hayden believes happened was the Kentucky Gun Company, a business legally authorized by the federal government to sell firearms, got caught up in Facebook’s ban on shutting down the private sales of firearms on the website.

California’s new gun confiscation program is a total disaster. The new law, which went into effect In January, aims to keep firearms out of the hands of potentially dangerous people, like domestic abusers and those afflicted with mental illness. No one wants wife beaters (and the unstable) to own guns, but the way the new law is being implemented sure feeds into the narrative that liberals, especially rabid anti-gunners, want to take away people’s firearms. A local Eyewitness News outfit looked into the matter and found serious problems: |

Licensed gun owners may openly carry handguns in Texas as of Jan. 1, and laws allowing firearms on college campuses are on the horizon.
This issue of safety seems to divide those for and against the news laws, but the two sides view safety quite differently.
Supporters of open carry say it is needed for self-defense purposes. |

There is not much the government can do about the sort of terrorist threat that President Barack Obama described in his speech following the massacre in San Bernardino. It will always be difficult to stop self-radicalized jihadists, operating under no one's instructions, from carrying out attacks on soft targets too scattered and numerous to secure.
The only viable alternative, self-help, is one that Obama seems ideologically incapable of considering. His proposals for new restrictions on firearms move in the opposite direction, based on the assumption that the problem is too many guns in too many hands. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
To have no proud monarch driving over me with his gilt coaches; nor his host of excise-men and tax-gatherers insulting and robbing me; but to be my own master, my own prince and sovereign, gloriously preserving my national dignity, and pursuing my true happiness; planting my vineyards, and eating their luscious fruits; and sowing my fields, and reaping the golden grain: and seeing millions of brothers all around me, equally free and happy as myself. This, sir, is what I long for. -- General Francis Marion, American War of Independence, Georgetown, SC [Source: 'Marion, The Life of Gen. Francis Marion' by M. L. Weems, Ch.18] |
