And he did it by highlighting the writings of Bret Stephens, a never-Trumper turned liberal.

A Connecticut lawmaker who helped draft the 1999 “risk warrant” legislation suggested Friday that states like Florida would benefit from a law that allows officials to remove a firearm from a home if a court finds the person at a high risk of violence or self-harm. “It has not turned into some sort of wholesale confiscation program for firearms,” Rep. Arthur O’Neill, R-Southbury, said Friday.

Gov. The horrifying school massacre in Parkland, Fla., has prompted another national debate about guns. Unfortunately, it seems that these conversations are never terribly constructive — they are too often dominated by screeching extremists on both sides of the aisle and armchair pundits who offer sweeping opinions without actually knowing anything about guns, crime, or mental illness.

Lessons from Parkland- School Safety and Defense in Depth

Plan for the unexpected and you want fault-tolerant safety. Look at the Parkland school attack in that light. We did some things wrong and many things right.

We asked someone else to protect our children..with the usual results. There are many things we can do to make our students safer. Passing more “gun safety legislation” isn’t one of them.

The only question is if politicians will lose their job if they ignore this issue. We didn’t learn from the last lesson either.

“We have to do something.”

I’ve heard that phrase time and again from politicians and gun control spokesmen. With some 23 thousand firearms regulations already on the books, it seems that we’ve done quite a lot that hasn’t worked. Those ineffective laws don’t stop the urge for more feel-good regulation after the murders in Parkland, Florida.

Let's take a look.

MI: Michigan gun numbers by county and statewide trends in gun ownership

An estimated 30% of Americans own a gun and another 11% live in a home with a gun, according to 2017 survey by Pew Research Center.

Collectively, Americans own an estimated 357 million firearms -- more guns than the U.S. population.

In recent years, the number of guns has increased. U.S. gunmakers manufactured 5.6 million guns in 2009 compared to 10.9 million in 2013 and 9 mllion in 2014. Some experts call that increase "the Obama effect" -- fear of stricter gun-control laws drove up sales.

Those numbers have dropped over the past year, now that Donald Trump is president.

There are no publicly available statistics on how many total guns are licensed in Michigan.
