Police across the United States are rethinking how they use force amid national outrage about questionable shootings and violent arrests.

The changes include efforts in Dallas to train officers to de-escalate situations by moving backward during target practice and arming some with sponge projectiles rather than guns. Public hunting access to South Dakota’s school and public lands could get a little tougher if a recently filed senate bill becomes law.

Senate Bill 78 sponsored by Sen. Betty Olson, R-Prairie City, if passed through the legislature, would require the Game, Fish and Parks Department to pay for every acre of school and public lands shown on the department’s public land hunting atlas or any other map published by a state department that says the land is open to public hunting.

With a vote of 15 yays, two nays and three abstentions, the Tempe Undergraduate Student Government passed a bill Tuesday that opposed the controversial Arizona gun House Bill 2072.

H.B. 2072, sponsored by Rep. Sonny Borrelli (R-Bullhead City) would allow students and faculty to carry concealed weapons on college campuses. The Arizona Board of Regents already voted to oppose the bill in January.

As a boycott of local groceries has spread to Big Y, Stew Leonard Jr. said his stores have no plans to change their gun policy.

“We talked about this as a family, and we feel like we have a very safe environment at Stew’s with security guards and over 100 security cameras,” said Leonard, CEO and president of the grocery chain with Connecticut locations in Danbury, Norwalk and Newington. “Obviously, we don’t want anyone coming in with an unconcealed weapon, but we are going to follow federal and state laws regarding guns.”

The words less lethal are emblazoned on the new shotguns the Aroostook County Sheriff's Department just received. The guns are meant for certain situations the Deputy Sheriff's could encounter.

Sheriff Darrell Crandall says, "Someone not actively pursuing anybody with a weapon but they may have a knife or a sword or a bat and they're swinging it. That's a situation you can't allow to escalate."

A proposal to reopen a season for hunting bobcats in New Hampshire drew plenty of opposition as well as some support at a packed public hearing Monday night, but the hours of public discussion showed a secondary issue: whether the controversy might spur bigger changes.

“The (Fish and Game) Commission shot themselves in the foot with this,” argued John Harrigan of Colebrook, a well-known outdoorsman and hunter due to his years writing for the Union Leader and other outlets.

The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved legislation Tuesday requiring strict lock-up of firearms in vehicles parked in San Francisco.

The ordinance came in response to a number of high-profile shootings in San Francisco last year, including the death of a young woman shot in July with a gun stolen from a federal agent's car. The killing of 32-year-old Kate Steinle sparked a national debate over immigration because the shooter was a Mexican national released from a city jail despite federal requests to detain him for deportation.

Growing up near Decorah, Ia., Catalina Vorwald learned to shoot handguns and rifles under the watchful supervision of her father and uncle.

She chose Simpson College in Indianola for her higher education, partly because of the school's shooting sports club founded in 2011 by students and a chemistry professor who share a love of hunting and the outdoors.

Authorities said a North Carolina woman shot and killed a man who broke into her home.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that the shooting happened sometime after 10 a.m. Friday at a home in Robeson County.

Deputies said the victim had left her home to run an errand. When she returned, there was a stolen Jeep parked in her driveway.

The woman entered her home with her gun and saw the suspect coming down her hallway, according to deputies.
