'The President's budget provides $4 billion to prevent and prosecute terrorist activities against our Nation, including nearly $290 million to strengthen our counterterrorism investigative capabilities. "Persons who are determined to kill large numbers have often targeted United States Post Office facilities. Other popular murder spree sites have been schools and churches. What these places have in common is that all ban law-abiding citizens from legally carrying personal defense weapons, access for criminals with weapons is relatively easy and unchallenged, and armed security is limited or absent. Mass murders are more likely to occur in designated gun free zones and not where others are armed. Large numbers of people are not shot in gun stores and at shooting ranges." |

"Soldiers didn't see a thing: A total of 40 weapons were stolen from an IDF base about 10 days ago after thieves broke into the base overnight. The weapons stolen include eight grenade launchers and 32 assault rifles. At this time Military Police have no leads in the case and estimate the weapons have already been handed over to criminal or terror elements."
"The latest theft is not the first such case at the base. In July 2005, Ynet reported two female troops were arrested after handing over three assault rifles to an Arab, apparently to cover a financial debt."
------- Submitter's note: Of course, mere civilians in Israel have to jump through a myriad of bureaucratic hoops to have rifles. Only the government is professional enough to safeguard them.

A bill creating a tax exemption for gun clubs has passed the state Assembly.
The bill, authored by Representative Steve Wieckert (R-Appleton), was written after something unexpected happened to the state's largely volunteer staffed gun clubs: they received tax bills from the state Department of Revenue, on their membership fees.
Wieckert's bill, which passed the Assembly with bipartisan support, would provide an exemption for clubs that offer a variety of outdoors safety and education classes. It still requires passage by the Senate and the support of Governor Doyle.

"The misconception that this bill will increase violence by putting weapons in the hands of those who mean to cause harm is a stereotype and fear tactic. Under the bill, those who apply for a license to carry a concealed weapon must meet a long list of requirements including an age requirement of 21 or older, undergoing criminal background checks, participating in a training course and various other tests that determine an individual’s competency. Data from those states where concealed carry is in effect indicates that permit holders do not create law enforcement problems and that crimes committed by permit holders are a rare occurrence. No state with concealed-carry permits has ever repealed its law." |

"Virginians who consider blaze orange the equivalent of the little black dress -- stylish, timeless, and appropriate for most social occasions might be wondering why the General Assembly is arguing over the right to hunt. A bill in the House of Delegates proposes shifting the regulation of hunting from county governments to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and would nullify any law passed after 1995 that controls where a person can fire a gun. Backers of the measure say some counties have become more aggressive in regulating sport shooting."
"But wait: Didn't the state's voters adopt, by a lopsided margin, a constitutional amendment protecting the right to hunt? Well, yes. Both the Assembly and the public signified in favor of the amendment (which also addresses fishing) five years ago." |

"Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and Governor Rod Blagojevich have teamed up to push legislation designed to thwart plans by a major hunting/fishing retailer to open a superstore in suburban Chicago. The bill, HB4693, would make it nearly impossible for any law-abiding entity to engage in the lawful retail sale of firearms in the state."
"Cabela's, based in Sidney, NE, recently announced plans to build a destination superstore in northwest suburban Hoffman Estates. The store would employ 400 people and feature a wide variety of gear to meet the needs of every outdoor sportsman. Of course, the retail sale of firearms would be a major component of the store's business."
"Cabela's announcement comes at a time when Blagojevich and Daley are pulling out all stops end private firearm ownership in the state. Within recent weeks, their backers in the legislature have introduced several bills intended to suck the life out of the state's long standing heritage of safe and lawful firearm ownership. Included along with HB4693 is HB2414 -- a highly controversial bill that would ban gun collecting and competitive shooting." |
