“Oh, and by the way, … if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is I don’t know,” said Donald Trump, about Hillary Clinton. “The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.” So Shakespeare has the character Antonio saying in The Merchant of Venice. (Act I.3) My experience of political life in the United States life permits me to observe that the Devil has favorite passages, mined from Scripture like nuggets of pitchy gold. “Judge not so that you be not judged.” |

Donald Trump's campaign chairman said Sunday the Republican presidential nominee's comments last week that gun advocates could deal with Hillary Clinton should not be interpreted as a threat. "Most people did not interpret it that way, it was not at all meant to be a threat," Paul Manafort told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union."

Not itching to get into a big political discussion or a Second Amendment debate, but everyone knows that President Obama has been one of the best things to happen to the gun industry since “Dirty Harry” Callahan shot up the bad guys in San Francisco in the 1970s. Believe it or not, it’s the same with some breeds of dogs. It seems that some people, wealthier ones usually, show more interest in getting protection dogs because they’re worried about the future if one candidate wins. |

Deadshot and Bourne stepped on a minefield. The popular characters hit the cineplex this summer in Suicide Squad and Jason Bourne, guns in hand, their marksmanship a telltale sign that film fans were in for a bloody good time. But as violent headlines — and a raging political debate on gun control — dominate the news, Hollywood has found itself battling accusations of hypocrisy. |

An Easthampton man has pled guilty in federal court for the illegal possession of guns he built in Massachusetts and then brought into New Hampshire. AR-15 rifles are the most common sporting rifles in the country. They are used for target shooting and many states allow you to hunt with them. Surprisingly, it’s pretty easy for people to make their own guns, both legally and illegally. |

Northeast Texans appear to be arming themselves at a healthy clip. Their reasons, local gun dealers said last week, run the gamut — personal protection, family tradition, to hunt and to compete on the range. "It's across the board," David Kidder, manager of Top Shot Indoor Range and Guns, said about people who are buying firearms: "The demographics would include just about everyone."

Because of research bans like the Dickey Amendment, Joel Kurtinitis has a deafening voice in the conversation over where to carry and not to carry guns [State Fair gun ban is useless, dangerous, Aug. 7]. The Dickey provision prohibits the Centers for Disease Control from researching gun violence. As such, Kurtinitis can claim anything his heart desires about protecting neighbors who he asserts need his protection. |

Shooting deaths of police officers in the US are on the rise this year. It’s a disturbing trend in itself, but perhaps more disturbing is the most common manner in which these officers were shot: ambushes. So far this year, 14 police officers have been killed in ambushes, and while that number may seem low, it represents a more than 45% increase over 2015, when only three officers were slain in ambush attacks, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. |

It’s too easy to buy guns illegally online. Due to the growth of online gun sales, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) has established a new team to investigate online gun sales, especially those made via the dark web, as reported on CNN. The ATF has shut down gun traffickers in Kansas and Alabama who were operating dealerships on the dark web that sold firearms made by Glock, Beretta, Uzi, Highpoint, and Walther, among others, to buyers around the world. According to a teenager who bought a handgun and other weapons materials on the dark web (and who is now serving a life sentence after being found guilty for plotting mass murder), buying a Glock online was “just like buying a bar of chocolate.”

If it sounds and looks like a gun, that doesn’t mean it’s real. If it’s hot pink or lime green, that doesn’t mean it’s a toy. If the barrel is capped with an orange tip – the telltale sign of an imitation gun – it could still be lethal. Police officers are forced to evaluate whether a weapon is real or fake under exceedingly varied and often dangerous circumstances that require split-second judgment calls. The answers are seldom black and white, and guessing wrong can mean the difference between life and death for either suspect or officer. |

We know that so called "gun-free" zones cost lives. I wrote a nice letter for my local school board. Unfortunately, it is meaningless without you. You can make it powerful. It takes a few minutes during the week, but you can change lives. Here is what you do with five minutes a day.
I offer you the words, but your actions make it politically powerful. Go save lives.
On day one, look up the contact information of your local school board and state representatives... |

Due in part to recent mass shootings, Democrats have begun to embrace gun control again. The Hill, a newspaper covering Congress, noted that this amounts to Democrats “betting that a shift in voter sentiment has turned a once-toxic issue into a political winner.” There's good reason to think Democrats are wrong, particularly if their calculations are driven by the stereotype that guns-rights supporters are mostly rural, working-class whites who seldom vote Democrat anyway. |

Fair warning: We’re predisposed to like the ladies and gents at Rise Armament. Not only do they have a good track record in our experience, but also they’re genuinely pleasant folks—always a welcome combination. So, when an RA-140 “Super Sporting” cassette (or cartridge) AR/Stoner pattern trigger showed up, we were rubbing our mitts in anticipation. When we saw the MSRP—$129—a profoundly unsuccessful back handspring ensued. Chiropractor and shooting pal Rick says we’ll be fine. Eventually. |

Hillary Clinton recently stated that we must rein in guns, suggesting there is an epidemic of gun violence and pointing to a number of high-profile mass shootings as evidence. The facts suggest otherwise.
