In our last installment, I was searching for a good load using a 200-grain lead SWC bullet for my .41 Magnum, a round that packs a punch but is kind to my gun hand.

I believe I’ve found it, with two different types of semi-wads, one from Stateline and the other of uncertain origin, which fell into my hands some time ago in an old Speer bullet box. It may not be the max load, but out of my 4-inch Model 57 Smith & Wesson and 4 5/8-inch Ruger Blackhawk, it is remarkably accurate.

A federal judge has refused to block a San Jose, Calif., “harm reduction ordinance” that requires firearms owners to pay an annual fee and to carry liability insurance to cover unintentional deaths, injuries, or property damage.

The ruling, by Judge Beth Labson Freeman at the US District Court for the Northern District of California, came ahead of a hearing Thursday on the city’s motion to dismiss the first of three lawsuits challenging the first-in-the-nation law. The judge said she was likely to consolidate the three lawsuits and later issue a single ruling.

But as part of their effort to mask their complete reversal of position when it comes to support for police, many Democrats—including Biden himself—have attempted to make the issue of rising crime about guns rather than policing, implying that support for the Second Amendment is incompatible with support for law enforcement.

Take, for example, a recent ad aired by a group aligned with Stacey Abrams, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee in Georgia. In the 30-second spot, a man identified as a former Deputy Sheriff accuses incumbent Republican Governor Brian Kemp of “making us less safe” for signing a constitutional carry bill into law earlier this year.

Is banning assault weapons constitutional?

A week before the House of Representatives approved a ban on "assault weapons," a federal judge in Denver explained why such laws are unlikely to pass constitutional muster. House Democrats either were not paying attention or did not care because they view the Second Amendment as an outmoded provision that imposes no meaningful limits on gun control.

Unfortunately for them, the Supreme Court has repeatedly held otherwise, ruling that the government may not prohibit law-abiding Americans from keeping handguns at home or carrying them in public for self-defense. The Court also has said the Second Amendment covers bearable arms "in common use" for "lawful purposes," ...

Our local congressional members are speaking out following a recent vote which would ban assault rifles. Many of our members are calling it a ‘gun grab’.

“On this vote the ‘yays’ are 217 and ‘nays’ are 213,” said Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D- CA).

The House passed a bill called the “Assault Weapons Ban of 2022”. The bill prohibits the sale, manufacture, transfer or import of various semi-automatic assault weapons, semi-automatic pistols and semi-automatic shotguns and large capacity ammunition feeding device. Following the recent mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York, there’s been a push for more gun control and Democrats have been eying this kind of legislation for a while.

Matthew J. Platkin, New Jersey's acting attorney general, and a group representing 20 states filed a legal brief last week supporting the new federal rule, which they say will be a critical component to enforcing state laws passed to halt trafficking of the guns.

“I’m disappointed, frankly, I sent you this letter days ago,” Hawley said to Wray. “This has been on your radar screen, the attorney general of our state sent you a letter before that. You’ve known about this. This is a significant concern … I don’t like the fact that the FBI is snooping around the concealed carry permit records of Missourians. I don’t like it at all. I don’t know what you’re going to do with the information but I don’t like that you’re putting our sheriff’s in this position.”

A famous mural, painted in the United States Capitol in 1863, is relevant.

The mural is “Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way, by Emanuel Leutze”, and is located in the West grand staircase of the House wing. It is 30 feet wide and 20 feet tall.

The mural shows 32 individuals traveling toward the West. There appear to be 27 adults, 19 of them men and eight women. There are five children, including two infants.

At least 12 firearms are shown in the mural, including ten long guns and two pistols. The woman under the word “Westward” in the top border has a long gun. A long gun is prominent in the lower left corner of the mural, and a revolver in the lower right corner. There are two boot knives evident and two bows ...

The time has come for President Joe Biden and the rest of the gun control politicians to pack up the worn-out line that “no one needs an AR-15 to hunt deer.”

Turns out, that recreational target shooters and hunters do want Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs). That’s the family of AR-platform [semiautomatic] rifles that come in many calibers. According to the 2022 Ammunition Consumption Study by Winchester Ammunition, more than half of recreational shooters firing a centerfire rifle used an MSR. Of those who hunted with an MSR, 40 percent chose the MSR as their firearm of choice.

The Supreme Court's Bruen Gun Decision Is Even Bigger Than You Think

Since Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas made crystal clear in his ruling in New York Pistol and Rifle v. Bruen that the Second Amendment is not a second-class civil right, the question becomes: how far does this decision go? After consulting several gun and constitutional lawyers, here’s the short answer: very far. Read on.

Thomas stated unequivocally that Americans’ right to carry a gun outside the home has been treated as a second-class right in modern times. Indeed, the whims of politicians have been treated with more respect than bedrock constitutional principles surrounding Americans’ right to defend themselves with guns.

A number of firearm companies have seen their shipments with UPS become damaged or go missing while on route to customers, while others have allegedly had their corporate accounts canceled by the parcel service, according to a report by Bearing Arms, a pro-Second Amendment news site.

Patrick Collins, CEO of The Gun Food, an ammunition supply company, told the news outlet that many packages his business had shipped via UPS had mysteriously vanished in transit.

Specifically, Collins alleged that out of 18,000 rounds of ammunition that he’s shipped, only around a third—roughly 6,000—were actually delivered.

Background checks — and by most accounts, gun sales — have dropped very sharply in 2022 compared to 2021. There have been just over 18.2 million gun checks in the first seven months, down from 25.1 million in the same period last year.

To determine the states with the greatest collapse in gun sales, 24/7 Wall St. listed all 47 states with a reported decline in firearm background checks from the first seven months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. States are ranked in order of the largest decline in background checks.

Reason Senior Editor Jacob Sullum takes a different view. "The new gun law is not an inspiring example of bipartisan cooperation to protect public safety," he says. "It's an illustration of how the worst instincts of both major parties combine to produce policies that are neither just nor sensible."

This video essay is based on Sullum's July 20 column, "A New Gun Law Reflects the Worst Instincts of Both Parties," and his follow-up article, "Gun Owners Who Are Disqualified Under State Law Can Now Be Charged With 'Trafficking in Firearms'"

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday that the New York State Police have seized 104% more firearms this year than during the same period in 2021, a feat she attributed to the state’s “intentional focus” on disrupting gun trafficking.

“We’re proud of it,” she said at a press conference in Albany. “We’re seizing more illegal firearms. We’re making more communities safe.”

Hochul sought to draw attention to the scourge of ghost guns — essentially, homemade firearms that fall outside the longstanding regulatory framework — in particular, noting that the state has confiscated over 400 self-made guns this year.

Growing up in a small Arkansas town, I was around guns frequently. I spent many an hour watching my cousins who were national skeet shooting champions. One of them, a female, is still ranked on the national circuit. I knew that guns were for hunting and recreation but also for protection.

By 1979, I was the proud owner of a Creole cottage in Treme and shortly thereafter a spiffy Triumph TR6 that I usually drove with the top down. A friend who worried about my safety gave me a pearl-handled one-shot derringer to carry in my purse. One fine summer day, I shut the car door with my purse and inadvertently shot myself right below the knee.

Officers burst into her apartment, and when Taylor's boyfriend fired once at police, she was shot and killed. Garland says Janes and Meany knew it wasn't true that Taylor's ex-boyfriend, who was a suspected drug dealer, had packages delivered to her home. But they put that information in the search warrant application anyway. Officials also allege that Detective Kelly Goodlett conspired with Jaynes to concoct a cover story after Taylor's death and lied to investigators. In Louisville, Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, gathered with supporters in a downtown park. Standing in front of a dozen cameras, an emotional Palmer remembered how people told her she was crazy for talking about a police cover-up.

Per the Constitution, Congress can provide for organizing, arming and disciplining militias. And for each state to appoint their officers and have the authority to train their militias within congressional guidelines.

Not to the professional level, but with specific training, including attitudinal indoctrination, to systematically equip members with the tools needed to combat hate and discrimination, and to evaluate and critique online toxic propaganda. Each militia a team, promoting guardrails, watching for outliers.

Members of the Armed Forces and the National Guard, relieved of active duty, get your militia card, and keep and bear. Citizens, until the signup is implemented, no changes to arms acquisition.

It’s an age-old question most hunters will never answer from personal experience: what’s the best gun for bear defense?

Selecting the right firearm requires careful consideration, but the question usually generates more uniform, strong opinions than helpful advice. Fortunately, the MeatEater crew has logged their fair share of miles in grizz country, so I caught up with a few of them to get their thoughts.

You’re unlikely to find yourself staring down the barrel of an angry grizzly, but as with most things in life, it’s best to follow the Boy Scouts and be prepared.

This week, the Boulder County Commissioners unanimously voted to pass a gun control package consisting of five ordinances to infringe on your Second Amendment rights. Commissioner Matt Jones claims these ordinances are “common-sense gun violence laws designed to help keep people safe,” but, apparently, common sense isn't common. These ordinances are restrictions that attack your constitutional right to bear arms and do nothing to promote public safety.

The gun control package includes the following five restrictions on your Second Amendment rights:

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Without freedom there will be no firearms among the people; without firearms among the people there will not long be freedom. Certainly there are examples of countries where the people remain relatively free after the people have been disarmed, but there are no examples of a totalitarian state being created or existing where the people have personal arms. — Neal Knox
