1. What’s a semiautomatic weapon?
A semiautomatic weapon fires one shot every time the trigger is pulled until the magazine is empty.
AR-15s are “gas operated” -- the original design used “direct impingement” or “direct gas impingement” - a vent in the barrel funnels gas from the shot fired back through a tube, which pushes the bolt carrier group to the rear of the weapon, where it impacts the buffer, and is then sent forward, reloading another round. |

He makes some valid points, but is either willfully ignorant about others or was fed a line of BS in the Marines. You do not need an FFL to own an automatic weapon, just a $200 tax stamp and a ton of paperwork, at least one that is now on the machine gun registry which they closed circa 1986. And the .223/5.56 is not some terror cartridge. It was developed from a varmint round and chosen mostly for its light weight and low recoil. It's considered underpowered for deer size animals in most states. I'm sure the writer served, but he also freely admits that he is no shooter outside his time as a boy scout or marine. |

I'm glad he had the decency to admit he was dumb. Statements such as "The bullet is designed to tumble and spin through the human body . . ." certainly confirm that his opinion of himself is correct. |

There is only one point of contention in this article, but it is a GLARING one:
"The cyclic rate for an M-16A2 or A4 or AR-15 is 800 rounds per minute."
He fails to differentiate between the original AR-15 (which was select-fire) and its descendants (which are semi-auto only). Once the military accepted the AR as its issue battle rifle, its designation changed and the only versions available to the general public were of the semi-auto variety.
This distinction is critical to the public's misunderstanding re: AR-15s - they are disingenuously led to believe that they are military-grade full-auto firearms because they LOOK identical.
And this guy did nothing to correct that shibboleth. |
